With this new Villa side it is going to take time to get consistently good performances. We'll lose plenty of games this season as well as having better moments. It's as simple as that. Those that don't have that patience or perspective are going to suffer. #avfc

During my 51 yrs at the BBC the mandarins often changed their minds about axeing certain programmes they didn’t value. Hope it’s not too late to reprieve Radio 4’s You And Yours. In these parlous times for vulnerable consumers, a strong programme like this is invaluable.

I am genuinely devastated. As a Trekkie I've long been a fan of Patrick Stewart's gifts, and he has given us so many moments to treasure. His portrayal of Captain Picard was legendary and unrivaled. I could spend the next week posting clips of my favorite scenes that he carried. Measure of a Man. Best of Both Worlds. Family. The Inner Light.
But the moment that lives in my brain forever was this exchange he had with a fan, blogger Heather Skye, at Comicpalooza 13 years ago, where he shared his experience as a survivor of domestic violence.
It was a moment of candor and vulnerability that you rarely see from men in public life, and so needed for such an important issue. More than that, it revealed the depth of his character.
We have lost someone utterly irreplaceable today.
“Live now. Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again.”
Thank you, Sir Patrick, for daring us to reach for the stars and dream of a world where we take care of each other.
🖖

FT: #AVFC 2-1 Man City
Fourth straight home win against City, perfectly marking Emery's four-year anniversary. Jackson will rightly get the headlines - he epitomises the rebooted Villa, with his second goal a demonstration of the pace & power the club wanted this summer. Yet Emery managed the game so well - fast start, Mbaye's sub to turn the tide and then nullifying City after going ahead again. You saw why there is so much optimism at Villa, despite a patchy league start.

Unai Emery's programme notes: "Let me disagree with the concept we have been reading – mainly from afar – that we have lost our 'spine'. No. We have changed some players. But the spine of this football club is our culture, from the board to the stands, the demands and high standards in our organisation, the sense of belonging of a huge fanbase and the overall rational management."

This has been a 9/10 transfer window.
Old and tired? Gone.
Want out? Gone.
Flirting with other clubs again? Gone.
And unlike previous windows… we didn’t hang around.
Tielemans gone? Bang! Gomes!
Martinez going? Bang! Suzuki!
Watkins going? Bang! Jackson!
The recruitment team were clearly well prepared… ready to pull the trigger as soon as a sale dropped. Sometimes prepared to swoop before the related sale even finalised to make sure we were secure.
Window after window of scrabbling for desperate signings on deadline day…
Now we sit, relaxed, on deadline day - watching others chase players up and down the UK’s motorways. Well within any financial restrictions with a strong mix of dynamism, power, youth and experience signed and sealed.
Need more pace? Got it.
Need lower wages? Got it.
Need a younger squad? Got it.
Need better deep distribution? Got it.
While the uninitiated in wider media spoke half-truths and tried to sow seeds of panic and discord - our leadership remained level headed.
Mapped-out. Intelligent. Calm. Professional.
As our badge used to say… we were Prepared.

Just a word on Suzuki when he starts for Villa.
Until the side is settled he's going to concede goals. He's a young keeper still and WILL make mistakes.
Villa fans need to accept this and back him, not slate him.

Won’t be booing any of them. All part of a squad that won us our first trophy for 30 years ffs.
Laughing at how many returning players we'll probably be booing this season at Villa Park 😂 #avfc

Yes,how dare an academically clever woman of sporting brilliance convey her utter pleasure at doing herself justice? Why should she mutter modest blandishments in her interviews? Enjoy the spotlight,Amy, it’s not always been a breeze for you 👏👏👏

Aston Villa can confirm that Lucas Digne has completed a permanent transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
The defender joined Villa in January 2022 from Everton and would go on to make 182 appearances in claret and blue, scoring four goals and registering 24 assists.
Digne was a key part of the side that won the UEFA Europa League last season before helping France reach the semi finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
A consummate professional, who was highly regarded by his fellow players and staff alike, Lucas leaves Aston Villa with the very best wishes of everyone at the football club.
