‘“I really feel for the 2023 generation. On paper they look like a bunch of geniuses, because they got their GCSE results in the year of highest grade inflation. But now with their A-level results they will suddenly be among the most disadvantaged.” theguardian.com/education/20…

NEW Massive drop in A level and GCSE grades expected: 75,000 fewer A* and A s at A level and 240,000 fewer top grades at GCSE. 60,000 kids could lose elite uni offers. Is it fair to go back to tough marking for the Class of 2023? @thetimes @FrankWNorris thetimes.co.uk/article/top-u…

“Having the right accommodation in place is almost a prerequisite…There is no point being an ambitious v-c, saying you’re going to double UK and international recruitment over five years, and then finding there is nowhere for them to live.” – @markcorver bit.ly/42m0YuD

Another insightful thread from @markcorver - here he breaks down demand for HE from 19-year-olds between first-time appliers and re-appliers from the previous year.
Something we have not seen in a while: UK19 year olds being 'stronger ' (down just 0.5%) in the UCAS data than UK18 year olds (down 1.8%). 2012 fees/route B effects aside, we have not seen this for 15 years. Is demand from older students back? Probably not. (1/5)

Given my interest in the M/F gap in HE, I thought this was good news but read @markcorver's thread - it's not as good as it looks on the surface because demand from women has fallen more sharply than for men creating the improvement in the gap
The new 2023 university application data is displaying some material differences between men/women. The application rate gap between men and women has narrowed to 12 percentage points, with the moves this year being easily the largest single year reduction in the sequence.(1/3)

As usual, @markcorver’s analysis is a must-read for understanding this year’s university admissions cycle (and future trouble brewing given the frozen tuition fee rate)
The university entry rate is set to fall this year, the first time since 2012, a major statistical event. In @thetimes today @SianGriffiths6 reports we think there has been a sea change in the difficulty of getting into university thetimes.co.uk/article/clamo… Key data points: (1/6)
Graph from dataHE signalling new era of university admissions. Rejection rates at selective Unis at record highs. Chances of first choice degree (or Uni at all) fallen. Important students are made aware of new reality & disadvantaged don't get squeezed out in race for places

"£24k income from a higher fee [int'l] student; subtract £12k teaching costs leaves £12k; enough to bridge the £3k fee gap for 4 UK students. This would imply you need around 20% of your intake to be paying higher fees this year," @markcorver explains. bit.ly/3QVOEuT
