I wrote on one of my favorite directors, the great Werner Herzog, the Power of Myth, and some thoughts on psychoanalysis and introspection.
"Werner Herzog has often been called the original enemy of introspection. But his objection to psychoanalysis is not that of a man who avoids his inner life. He is the enemy of therapy culture insofar as he is more like a living archetype..." — @markgranza im1776.com/the-burden-of-dre…

Categorizing rioters as “barbaric” completely misses the point. Modern riots in the West are mostly the result of an excess of civilization. This explains why opportunistic looting of luxury items occurs in every one of them. A true barbarian takes your gold, rapes your wife and seizes your land. A modern rioter steals a luxury item so he can return to the same world with a higher status and comfort level than before.

.@jamespoulos on why Anthropic's UBI-like proposal could become a bribe to surrender your humanity: "Interesting to see a company do this instead of a government, which shakes up some of the preexisting ideological stances on UBI." "You read the sci-fi corpus and you quickly learn that you can be very optimistic within a dystopian setting or very pessimistic in a utopian setting." "One corporation eats everything, no one owns their data, total surveillance state. But you can have an optimistic UBI: we’re gonna send everyone money so that they can preserve their humanity." "The flip side: a utopian AGI world. But we’re gonna give everyone money to basically bribe them to surrender their humanity and become food or battery packs or biological bootloaders for this post-human intelligence."

Dispatch from the ground 👇
Milan is quiet today. Damage remains visible on some of the busiest shopping streets, though most affected shops have already been repaired. Just the regular army checkpoints at the Duomo and in surrounding areas. I spoke with some soldiers, however, and they expect heavy reinforcements over the weekend. Several accounts linked to Antifa networks have announced more demonstrations planned for this Saturday and every weekend after that, in Milan, but also Bologna, Turin, Rome, Florence, Padua, Genoa, and Bari. The main one seems to be “M1710” (October 17th Movement), which has gained 16.8k (and counting) followers on IG in two days. Yesterday it published a “manifesto” declaring itself an independent movement of disaffected youth inspired by mostly leaderless uprisings over the past fifteen years, from the Arab Spring and Occupy to Hong Kong 2019. It tries to distance itself from existing far-left groups, deploying generic, anti-establishment rhetoric, yet nearly all of the 57 accounts it follows are openly antifa. Typical of how the far left has operated in Italy since the early 2010s, borrowing the Five Star Movement’s “no leaders, no party” branding to present itself as something new and exciting at every opportunity. This is why we very rarely have riots in the north.
🚨#BREAKING: The people of Milan in Italy have had ENOUGH of the 3rd world migrants destroying their stores and are now BEATING THEM BACK with batons!!! A lone Italian man wielding a baton starts SINGLE-HANDEDLY TAKING DOWN multiple looters at the Under Armour store in Milan!!!

This is such a weak response from the White House. Call up the french military and tell them they have the full support of the United States of America to do whatever is necessary to save Europe. But instead this performative "told you so" just says "we support the riots".
Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion. They ignored fundamental questions of assimilation and compatibility. They were told it would lead to this and they didn't listen. I pray that France, a beautiful country of amazing people, will stop this madness before more of its landmarks burn. And I hope Americans are paying attention. This is the future congressional Democrats seek for your country.

THE ITALIAN JOB (1969) Before shooting the Indiana Jones trilogy, cinematographer Douglas Slocombe lensed this visually vibrant and geometrically composed, kinetic caper. He delivered a playful tone with precision craftsmanship.

Of course it has "meaning" to them. Otherwise they wouldn't try to destroy it. It just means the opposite of what it does to conservatives. Conservatives see a cathedral, think about the past, and feel pride in their heritage. Immigrants see a cathedral, also think about the past, and see evidence of historical oppression. Both have "meaning". Here's the problem: cathedrals aren't museum pieces. They're portals conceived to carry energy across time and inspire the human spirit to rise ever higher, and Europe has forgotten that.
Your universe has no meaning to them They will destroy everything

40 years since making The Color of Money. I had the privilege as a young artist, to have a general meeting with Paul Newman and separately with Martin Scorsese years before making this film, where they shared some of their wisdom on cinema. Of course, I’d seen their films, but prior to meeting them for the first time, I set up a personal study course where I would watch their films in sequence from the beginning of their careers, up until that point in time. After being cast in The Color of Money, I once again studied all of their films in sequence. Having studied their work, then being able to see firsthand these incredible artists, the towering legends of our field, at work on set, I was able to observe their practical application in every aspect of acting and filmmaking from their point of view. I will always be grateful for this opportunity and for the generosity that Newman and Scorsese showed me with their knowledge of cinema and insight throughout the entire process. To Marty, Paul, and the enormously talented cast and crew, it was a pleasure and an honor to be part of this film with you all! I have carried this experience and knowledge with me my entire career.
