I've been critical of many aspects of our health system and tried to gather data to support those criticisms. Because I think it's not only important but possible for us to do better. What would I change? Glad you asked. healthdatabc.ca/platform/

Free healthcare: it’s expensive.
The irony of free healthcare. Neurosurgeon insists on MRI to see. 6-13 months for the MRI or pay $950. Pay $120 twice a week for physio waiting for free MRI. You can Pay $200 a day for more private hospital room. Your insurance may cover some of those two. After surgery back to private physio. We have randomly chosen what is free and what is private in Canada. We need to stop arguing about privatizing and look at why we have waits. Politicians, unions and professional, regulators create waits. Put them all in a room and demand accountability.

#9 all day long because you need that to improve the rest of the things on your list, and it provides the incentives needed to do so when it comes to healthcare, silence literally kills

When govt reports on CT/MRI, it's via a brief report saying e.g.: "The total number of MRI exams performed in 2023/2024 was more than 322,000 – a 83% increase [vs] 2016/17 and 22,981 more [vs] 2022/23... nine out of 10 patients waiting 159 days or less." And then goes on to talk about the new scanners, techs, opening hours, etc. Helpful? Are we doing well? Poorly? You'd never know from these reports. Which are pretty much marketing fluff, not useful data. They never talk about capacity, waits, or where the trouble spots are. That's the data patients need to inform their own health choices and to hold governments accountable. And what the health authorities need to improve their performance. They don't publish it, but it's available via FOI if you have the time and money. I thought it was worth having. It's unfortunately a bit more detailed (see attached). Any questions? 😃 Over the next couple of weeks, I hope to put something together that breaks this all down, explains why different parts are important, and put it all in a much more usable form. And of course to ask the key questions: why isn't the government doing this, and when will they start?

Very disappointed to see @BrennanDay4CV did not hold Courtenay-Comox. For anyone from any party who was serious about accountability in health care, this is a loss. I hope the Conservatives are smart enough to take advantage of his knowledge and expertise moving forward.

Ideas are cheap. (and in government, heavily filtered by dysfunctional incentives) We're not hurting because the people in charge aren't aware of the "correct" solutions. Implementation and (objective, public, verifiable) measurement matters a whole lot more.

Trying to figure out the best way to present some fairly complex data on CT/MR scans, including volume of scans, target benchmark at different priorities, % scans meeting benchmark, and 50/90th percentile waits. Here's where I'm at so far…

Having read this draconian legislation - I cannot recall a larger government overreach - I would agree with you. Anna pushed hard for repeal to be part of the Conservative Party platform. Still pressure needed. When does a government give up power? bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/docum…

In 2025, there were more MRIs done at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver (18,276) than in all of Northern Health combined (12,699, across three sites). Vancouver General Hospital came close at 12,530.

p.s. that was just outpatient MRIs when you factor in inpatient, both SPH (23913) and VGH (34815) are ahead of NH (22184)

Not that it's a bad idea... but my fear is they'll end up putting random ideas into practice as "solutions" without comprehensive public metrics to measure the results. Sound familiar? And we all know that, no matter how good the idea, implementation matters. Measurement first.

I think the Conservatives don't yet have a real plan on health. We'll see if they're open to listening to experts in the field who can guide them to build a better, accountable health system. Or if they'll listen to others who are more ideological. I'm hoping for the former.

Thanks for your efforts and voice in this campaign @samchandola. The timing wasn't right for CentreBC in terms of preparation and then the Conservative pivot from KLF-crazy to kindler-and-gentler Lorne decreased the perceived need for an alternative. If the Cons are able to govern in a sane, moderate, and effective manner, there will be less impetus for a strong Centrist alternative. If they revert to type (which I hope they don't), that changes things. And if so, I know we've learned our lesson on being prepared.

On a personal note, I'm looking forward to a bit of a social media "detox" and getting my diet and exercise routine back on track. I'm hoping my future self will be smart enough not to injure both my forearm tendons and knee prior to an election campaign. 😉

Congratulations to Premier-designate Lorne Doerksen and the BC Conservatives on their decisive election victory. As Mayor of Port Coquitlam, I look forward to working constructively with the new provincial government to address the challenges facing our communities. I also want to congratulate Mike Farnworth on his re-election as MLA for Port Coquitlam. People in Port Coquitlam, and indeed right across British Columbia, expect their elected representatives at every level of government to work together, find common ground and deliver more than just promises. They expect real results that make a meaningful difference in their everyday lives. That’s the responsibility we all share, it’s the work that lies ahead, and I look forward to doing my part.
