SpaceX shares have nosedived following its highly anticipated IPO.
Elon Musk’s historic reign as the world’s very first trillionaire has come to an abrupt end just over a week after it began. Following a blockbuster initial public offering earlier this month, SpaceX shares surged to a peak of $225 on June 16, temporarily pushing Musk's net worth past the trillion-dollar milestone.
However, the initial market euphoria quickly evaporated, sparking a massive sell-off that dragged SpaceX shares down to the mid-$150s and shrunk Musk's net worth to a still-unfathomable $957 billion.
Even after losing his trillionaire status, Elon Musk’s remaining $957 billion net worth is still larger than the individual annual GDP of countries like Switzerland, Poland, or Argentina, reflecting the immense economic power concentrated in US tech leadership.
Regardless, the dramatic downturn has been compounded by a broader global tech correction, which also hit Musk’s electric vehicle giant, Tesla.
Financial analysts point out that SpaceX's sky-high valuation relies heavily on retail investors betting on Musk’s personal vision rather than the company’s current business fundamentals. Seizing on this volatility, short sellers are rapidly piling on bets against the newly public aerospace giant, signaling that the market remains deeply divided over whether SpaceX can sustain its astronomical valuation.
