I was drawn to Silicon Valley because of people's healthy relationship to work.
connection to mission. friends. ambition. financial security. hard work. but also free time. positive sum vibes. pride in being a part of it. joy.
this is no longer the case. my friends have gone mad. and there's almost nowhere to hide.
refusing to accept this fate, I went searching for safe havens.
I found (at least) one in ottawa and spent the last 6 months with @turbopuffer where they've got silicon valley chops, canadian kindness, and danish sense of humor. it's been the perfect medicine.
I wrote about it in @colossusmag
The people of Silicon Valley are unwell.
If you work at a frontier lab or decacorn, youâve got it bad. You havenât seen your kids, your girlfriendâs annoyed, invites from friends to hang out are waning, even weddings are on hold. This is the time to make your mark and make your money, after all.
If youâre building a startup thatâs trying to compete with or be one of these companies, youâve got it bad. Maybe you passed up a job offer at one a couple years back, which means you left $100M on the table, you fucking idiot. Being an underdog isn't as fun as you thought.
If youâre working on a pre-AI startup, youâve got it bad. Not too long ago you were the belle of the ball, but now your 30% year-on-year growth doesnât feel like growth at all. It feels like death.
"Too many of my friends are spiraling," Brie Wolfson writes. "I donât know how weâre supposed to live and work like this."
Itâs all too much, too fast. Too much money, too much growth, too much power, too much change. Every month, a new frontier model is released. Every day, a new unicorn is minted. Seriously. 300 days into the year 2026, and 311 unicorns have been minted so far.
So whatâs left for the sane ones? Brie went looking for teams playing a different game. She found one in Ottawa: a search infrastructure company that many of the AI darlings rely on.
It's growing fast, and its people are well.

I've been paying the USD price for netflix since moving back to Canada in 2020. @Muse caught it saying it was odd to be paying $40/month for a netflix account and not normal to have FX fees đ
Worth highlighting we @turbopuffer are looking for a controller! Right hand to our cfo.

I take back what I said about needing a personal AI. I can technically do all the same things with hermes + telegram + Mac mini but @Muse has just made it all so much easier. Turns out not thinking about which of the 36 models to use and having it all in a single chat interface is nice.

Meta will continue to be successful because they understand that a winning consumer AI strategy is âhey you can use AI to negotiate a good deal on a Peloton through Marketplace and btw we made a silly little AI character with a fluffy butt that you can look at on your new Meta Tamagotchiâ
not ârun our open weight model 6.7.1 on this new Chinese orchestration architecture oh and btw it might take your job and kill you good luckâ
Everyone keeps building AI agents to make phone calls for you and the companies hang up. Who is making the AI agent to answer these calls? AI phoning AI đ€

your product is only as smart as the data it can reach.
make your product smart. unleash your cow.
My life must be really boring because I don't understand the hype for all the new personal AI assistants.
I don't buy things that often, travel is a few times a year, bills autopay, personal email is 5 mins, book the dentist during previous appointment....đ€·

September is the best month of the year in Canada. Ideal daytime temps, no humidity, no bugs, days still long, trees just starting to turn.
One of the busiest months of the year for recruiting is a bonus.
