Something a friend showed me today. I just think it's really relevant, so want to share it with all of you as well.

My oldest son and daughter are home from college for a few weeks. Arrived last night. My son just came up to ask if he could cook me something for lunch. My daughter came in and asked if she could get me something to drink or if I needed anything. I will not accept any parenting accolades--they came down Heaven pretty much perfect, near as I can tell-- but will gladly accept any and all statements of jealousy (for me) or admiration (for my kids).

What winning at life looks like.

Treasured parental moment: asking my youngest what he would like to do before bed and he answers, "Let's play a game." Then he pauses, reflects, and says, "Actually, could you read to me?" And as an added bonus, he wants me to read one of my books to him. Doesn't get much better than that. (And, because someone will inevitably ask: no, I will not read him one of my horror novels. Yet.)

The other night I surprised my teen daughter by trying to tickle her ribs...and her response was a solid palm-strike to my forehead. Just now I jumped out at her and grabbed her knee while she was lying on the sofa...to which she reacted by instantly kicking me in the stomach. I think she's going to make it through the dating process all right. Though I am still 100% absolutely going to show every boy who comes to the door my collection of martial arts weapons and inform them that, should she return anything other than happy, they will get to decide only which weapon goes in them.
