While celebrating Haddon's birthday yesterday, I was watching videos from when we brought him home. This clip from when he landed in Chattanooga, and met his grandparents, gets me every time.

Across my life, my times of greatest intimacy with God have always come during the seasons of greatest pain in my life. The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18

We are in my absolute favorite time of year: the "we save money because we don't have to turn on the heat or the AC" season. The weather is awesome. Saving money is even better.

🧵 I’m concerned about how we, as followers of Christ, talk to people who disagree with us. Most Christians I know care deeply about truth. That’s good. We should hold firmly to what is true. But we can speak the truth in ways that make people less willing to listen.

🧵 Those cheers can fool us. They can make us feel certain we’ve done something right, even when we’ve made it harder for someone to hear what we’re saying.

🧵 People won’t always agree with us, no matter how graciously we speak. But before we assume someone is rejecting the truth, we should ask: Have I given them something to consider, or have I mostly made them feel insulted?

Today was DAY ONE of 3 weeks of travel. @micahfries & I met with pastors and imams here in San Francisco- I spoke with @sh_hamzayusuf at @zaytunacollege about the moment we find ourselves in and how we respond.

I am grateful to President Trump for calling off this livestream.
BREAKING: President Trump announces that the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, convicted of killing 13 people in the Fort Hood shooting, will no longer be livestreamed. Trump says Hasan's execution by firing squad will proceed as scheduled and immediate family members of the victims may attend the execution in person if they choose. "They deserve to witness justice."

I love the Southeast & Chattanooga/Ringgold is my favorite place I've ever lived. That said, the west/West Coast is gorgeous & I love the culture. Seattle today (the most beautiful big city in America), San Francisco the rest of the week & Denver next week. They're just special

I’m a Packers fan. I’m a Royals fan. I’m a Gators fan. I’m a Man UTD fan. It’s hard to imagine a more disappointing sports year than the one I’m having.

The fundamental problem for those endorsing the live-streaming of an execution is that their argument rests on public execution as a deterrent, when history and more recent video games/media/culture/etc. seem to indicate that it's more likely to promote voyeurism than deterrence.

Thus, it actually exacerbates the potential for violence, instead of achieving the desired outcome. In simpler terms, it's likely to do the opposite of what you want.

And to be very clear, the shooter deserves justice. I unequivocally support that. That's not my objection. The concern is the wisdom and morality of live-streaming the execution.

Seneca warned that Rome’s bloody spectacles corrupted the people who watched them. A civilization erodes when it cultivates an appetite for executions as a form of entertainment. Secretary Hegseth’s plan to livestream the Fort Hood execution risks feeding that appetite. The victims deserve justice administered with solemnity. Broadcasting a death diminishes us and is not an effective deterrent. I urge him to reconsider.

Pastors, of course, you should encourage your members to vote and to engage in the political sphere, but be clear with them that the most influential way Christians are called to be salt & light happens outside the ballot box, in their everyday lives, and not through their vote.
