Eleven women. Five accuse Donald Trump of rape or sexual assault in Jeffrey Epstein’s company or presence. Others describe encounters that raise questions about possible trafficking. Now House Judiciary Democrats are alleging that Trump’s Justice Department withheld evidence and obstructed efforts to investigate Epstein’s potential co-conspirators. They are calling for an independent special counsel. These are grave allegations, not criminal findings. But that makes an independent investigation more important—not less. The president should not get to decide whether allegations involving himself are investigated by the Justice Department he controls. If the evidence warrants scrutiny, the investigation must follow the evidence—not the political interests of Trump.
