I was recently watching a television programme called The Dictionary of Useless Knowledge on Unbelievable Human Beings (알쓸인잡), where Namjoon was one of the hosts. During the Pre-meeting teaser, he sees a poster of Wong Kar-wai's 2000 film In the Mood for Love andtalksa about its connection to The Most Beautiful Moment in Life (HYYH) album. That immediately caught my attention. While HYYH is a body of work I have always found fascinating, I hadn't really explored its cinematic influences from this particular perspective. The more I looked into the film, its visual language and the ideas it explores, the more interesting the connection became. What particularly stood out to me was that the Chinese title of In the Mood for Love is 花樣年華 (Huāyàng Niánhuá), while HYYH's Korean title is 화양연화 (Hwayangyeonhwa). Both refer to the beauty of youth and the most beautiful years of one's life. But I think the connection goes beyond the similarity in their titles. Both works explore the fleeting nature of beautiful moments, the relationship between memory and time, and the bittersweet experience of looking back at something that can never quite be relived. So I wanted to explore this connection more closely, the film's cultural and cinematic context, Wong Kar-wai's storytelling techniques, the themes that run through both works, and how these ideas might have informed the visual and emotional language of HYYH. 🧵
