The mighty Emlyn (Crazy Horse) Hughes. Nov. 1979. And his first game back at Anfield after his move to wolves. A player who gave everything for the shirt. https://nitter.gq/t.co/nKYHNa8est #LFC #YNWA #Liverpool

🚨 Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool supporters booing Jordan Henderson during Chelsea’s penalty: “I saw the moment Jordan picked up the ball and the Liverpool supporters started booing him. I also saw him smiling. I know that smile. Sometimes Jordan smiles when he’s uncomfortable because he doesn’t want you to see that something has affected him. And I thought, well, this is a strange thing to watch. I spent years with this man. I know what he gave to Liverpool, and I know what it cost him sometimes. There was a period when people questioned whether Jordan was good enough to captain Liverpool. He heard all of it. He wasn’t Steven Gerrard, he wasn’t the most technically gifted midfielder in England, and everybody seemed very interested in reminding him. But I remember one conversation after a difficult game. He was upset because he thought he hadn’t done enough. I told him, ‘Jordan, you cannot solve every problem on the pitch yourself.’ He said, ‘But somebody has to take responsibility.’ I said, ‘Yes, and sometimes that somebody can be another player.’ He looked at me like I had suggested something completely ridiculous. That was Jordan. You could be winning comfortably and he would still be shouting at somebody for not tracking a runner. You could be losing and he would be the first person asking for the ball. Sometimes I had to tell him to calm down. Imagine that. Me, telling somebody else to calm down. And now I see him in a Chelsea shirt, picking up the ball before a penalty, taking the attention away from the player who is actually going to shoot. People are asking, ‘Why is he behaving like the captain?’ Because that’s what he’s always done. He doesn’t know how to stand there and watch everybody else deal with the pressure. I remember telling him once, ‘One day you will stop playing football, Jordan, and you will have to learn how to sit quietly.’ He said, ‘I don’t think that’s going to happen.’ I believed him. Listen, Liverpool supporters have every right to want their team to win. If Jordan is playing against Liverpool, of course they want him to lose. He understands football better than most people. But I hope they remember something. Jordan Henderson spent 12 years at Liverpool. He was there when things were difficult, when people laughed at us, when we lost finals, and when we finally started winning them. He didn’t become a different person when we lifted the Champions League. He was the same man who had been shouting at everybody when we were struggling. And he didn’t become a different person when he left Liverpool either. Chelsea have not signed a man who is going to spend 90 minutes remembering how much he loves Liverpool. They have signed a footballer who will give them everything because that is the only way he knows how to play. I would be disappointed in him if he did anything less. Maybe the supporters were simply trying to put him off. Maybe they thought he was taking the penalty. That’s football. But when I saw him smiling, I wondered whether he was remembering all those years when the same people were shouting his name. Because I remember them. I remember Jordan lifting trophies for Liverpool. I remember him comforting younger players after defeats. I remember the times he played when he was exhausted and still wanted to know what more he could do. You don’t have to cheer for him in a Chelsea shirt. But you can remember what he was in a Liverpool shirt. And if you ask me whether Jordan Henderson should stop behaving like a captain because he no longer plays for Liverpool, my answer is no. Liverpool didn’t make him care that much about football. That was the reason we wanted him to lead us in the first place.”

⚽ How Strong Should Iraola Go Tonight? #LFC 🆚 Chelsea | #CarabaoCup #EFLCup Liverpool supporters appear more divided than ever over the Carabao Cup. Some demand the strongest possible side against Chelsea, others would happily sacrifice progression to protect the squad for Arsenal on Sunday. I suspect Andoni Iraola stands somewhere in the middle, and rightly so. Liverpool have won four consecutive matches, confidence is returning, and Arsenal's shock elimination has opened up a genuine opportunity to pursue another Wembley triumph. There is considerable value in maintaining that momentum. Yet the demands on this squad are becoming increasingly unforgiving. Injuries have already restricted Iraola's options, and risking further casualties ahead of Sunday's Premier League encounter would be an expensive gamble. My preference is substantial rotation, with enough experience retained to provide stability. Give the youngsters responsibility, trust their ability and allow them to earn their place in the quarter-finals. I would also expect Iraola to name several established stars on the bench as insurance should the contest begin slipping away. There is little wisdom in exhausting the squad unnecessarily, although surrendering a trophy opportunity before kick-off would be equally difficult to justify. Chelsea will provide a stern examination, but Liverpool's emerging talent deserves the opportunity. 🔺 My predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Gomez, Araujo, Jacquet, Tsimikas; Nyoni, Gravenberch; Ngumoha, McConnell, Barcola; Koumas. 🔺 Score Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea A draw and the lottery of penalties wouldn't shock me. How strong would you go tonight? Protect the stars or pursue another trophy?

🔴 Liverpool Are Stirring, and Anfield Is Beginning to Believe There was something deeply satisfying about Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Brighton. A fourth consecutive win, a first home #PremierLeague triumph under Andoni Iraola, and perhaps the clearest indication yet that this side is developing the character required to compete against the leagues’ best sides. Brighton deserve enormous credit. They arrived in magnificent form and played some excellent football, dominating possession and asking serious questions of Liverpool’s defensive organisation. Yet for all their territorial superiority, they managed a solitary shot on target. Much of that was down to Ronald Araújo, who was, by some distance, my Man of the Match. The Uruguayan was immense. Five duels contested, five won, three tackles and an authority that seemed to grow with every Brighton attack. Jeremy Jacquet was excellent alongside him. Further forward, there were encouraging signs of genuine understanding developing between Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola. The movement and combinations during the first half were particularly impressive, with Barcola’s determination creating Isak’s goal. Wirtz continues to blossom, making his injury withdrawal especially frustrating. Cody Gakpo also contributed positively, although his decision-making on several promising counterattacks left me exasperated. There were opportunities to punish Brighton further, squandered through hesitation or a poorly timed release. Nevertheless, this was a mature, disciplined performance against strong opposition. #LFC have climbed to fourth, confidence is growing, and the players increasingly appear comfortable with Iraola’s demands. Arsenal visit next weekend, offering another considerable examination of progress. For now, Anfield can savour a victory of genuine significance. Something is beginning to take shape here, and I rather like what I’m seeing.

🟥 Emlyn Hughes: A Legacy Liverpool Must Bring Home James Pearce’s article in The Athletic this morning, revealing that Emlyn Hughes’ extraordinary collection of medals, shirts and memorabilia is going to auction, stirred something in me. Emlyn, affectionately nicknamed 'Crazy Horse' by The Kop, left Liverpool when I was three years old. I have no memories of watching him play. Yet he sits alongside Kevin Keegan as the only two players in my all-time Liverpool top ten whom I never saw live. My first introduction to Emlyn was as a captain on A Question of Sport* It was only later, watching the John Motson narrated History of Liverpool FC in the 1980s, that I began to appreciate the magnitude of the man. Watch the old footage. That boundless, box-to-box energy, the skill, the infectious enthusiasm, the sheer determination. There was something of the Steven Gerrard that a later generation would come to worship. Listen to Shankly and Paisley speak about him. Hear the admiration of his teammates. Watch his interviews, that wonderful humour, warmth and commanding presence. Here was a man you would willingly follow into battle and beyond. Four league titles, two European Cups, 665 appearances. Liverpool's first captain to lift European football's greatest prize. He was taken at just 57. Far, far too young. His family understandably want these treasures shared with the world. What better place than Anfield? With the collection expected to fetch over £500,000, I believe Liverpool FC should purchase it in its entirety and give it pride of place in the Anfield museum. Every generation of Liverpool players walk in the footsteps of giants like Emlyn Hughes. Our club should ensure those footsteps are never forgotten. Would you like to see #LFC buy the entire collection?
