ALT Specific Workplace PWD Discrimination Protections Are Absolutely An Urgent Need Rangkaian Solidariti Demokratik Pesakit Mental (SIUMAN) is concerned by the statement made by Human Resources Minister Sivakumar as reported by Malaysiakini on there being no need for specific legislation that protects Persons With Disabilities (PWD) in the workplace. The minister seems to be unaware of the second class citizen status of PWD in Malaysia and the lack of existing protections for us in any area of life. In his parliamentary answer, and during the subsequent press conference, the Minister indicated that only eight cases of discrimination have been reported, and none of these involve PWD.

ALT SIUMAN would further like to draw the Ministerโs attention to the ASEAN Declaration On Disability-Inclusive Development and Partnership For a Resilient ASEAN Community and Malaysiaโs obligation with regards to the CRPD, which includes: - Continue to respect, protect, fulfil, promote, and enforce the rights of persons with disabilities in line with Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ASEAN Enabling Masterplan and other relevant global and regional disability-related instruments; - Further mainstream disability-inclusive as well as evidence and results-based approaches to protect and empower persons with disabilities, focusing on distinct needs of disability-based intersectionality aspects;

ALT We urge that the Minister to call for a stakeholder consultation with communities and PWD to better understand the challenges and discrimination faced by the community and ensure the presence of rights-based disabled disability advisors to ensure his ministryโs gap in understanding the state of workplace discrimination (and beyond) against PWD is addressed within his ministry and in governmentโs policies.
