Remember that old saying Not your keys, not your coins? With the recent hardware exploits, I have been thinking this saying is no longer enough to keep you safe. Ledger proudly promotes itself on their website as "With Ledger, you have the benefit of secure self-custody; guaranteeing you have ownership of your keys and your coins." That is simply not true anymore. Tampered devices with hidden hardware implants were sold through one of Ledger's own authorised resellers, and bad actors used them to steal from people who thought their assets were safe. Ledger says all confirmed cases come from that one reseller, but who can vouch for that? There are already unconfirmed reports of tampered devices bought elsewhere. Fittingly, the 6529 Memes card for that exact saying is titled The Illusion. Maybe crypto security really is one. Feels bad, man.
