They extract all of the person’s wealth until they qualify for medicaid, at which point the state pays for whatever time they have left. This is explicitly the business model. This will become extremely politically salient in the coming years.
Currently having an existential crisis over this
This is one of those multiple-things-are-true-at-once situations: we *have* to put into place better public funding and/or social insurance systems to support elder care (and those who work with seniors) AND there will never, ever be enough beds in facilities for our senior population.
Here's what I mean: if you add up every bed in U.S. assisted living facilities, independent living facilities, and nursing homes, there are around 3 million total beds. There are presently more than *61 million* Americans over the age of 65, and those numbers are rising rapidly. What's more, by 2035, we'll have nearly *12 million Americans over the age of 85!*
So we're going also have to adapt our neighborhoods, communities, workplaces, families -- nearly every aspect of society -- to meet the needs of a burgeoning senior population. There are opportunities here: opportunities for more connection, opportunities to restore intergenerational bonds, opportunities for a more humane economy, opportunities to center care in how we relate to one another. This one, though, is going to both take much more public funding and also much more than just public funding.

people love a cute little thing to take care of, they don't always love a person they have a real relationship with; children naturally don't like the people who control their whole lives and parents can't let go of the idea of the cute thing. idk, abolish the family etc

I do not understand what billionaires think the final outcome of all this is. If nobody has a living wage, they cannot buy your products, pay for your services, or rent the properties being owned and hoarded. At that point, does the whole thing not just collapse?

Seeing that an *employer negotiated* premium for an ok family healthcare plan is $60k + makes socialism look pretty fucking good to a lot of people, we’re past the time for tinkering at the edges with “smart market-driven solutions.” Healthcare shouldn’t be for profit. Period.

I don't want to “download the app” to pay for parking. I don't want to “create an account” to see a menu. I don't want to “provide feedback” on a 30-second interaction. I just want to exist in the physical world without a digital leash

There is a certain age past which you gotta stop villainposting. Like if you're 30+ and you still haven't done the thing that will make all the people who 'wronged' you grovel to you for forgiveness, you gotta let it go and just make something cuz the spite isn't motivating you

I don’t dispute that living in a city with a homelessness crisis is unpleasant, but the only solution to that is giving people places to live. All other "solutions" are just about trying to reduce the visibility of the problem by shoving them into the carceral system.

It’s time to drop all of the relational ending fantasies. The fantasies about how no one can ‘handle my energy’. ‘I’m a chosen one who is more spiritually evolved than others’. Or ‘everyone is jealous or in competition with me’. All strategies to avoid the hurt of rejection.

being trans isn't a mental illness but I'm starting to think transphobia might be. my god these people are completely out of touch with reality and SO confident about it, I think it might actually classify as a delusion

I love those moments when you realize that somebody genuinely likes you–and not because you're useful or impressive or connected to something they want. They just think you're funny, enjoy your company, and want you around. Beautiful stuff.

love is no substitute for good parenting. lots of people Love things they then fuck up. See pets as another example. Well loved and pampered pets don't mean they're trained well. Well loved and cared for (materially) kids doesn't mean you've raised them well.

Humans act like they appreciate empathy and kindness but the reality is that a lot of humans don’t really respect nice people and lowkey resent them.
It’s so backwards that the burden of personal growth falls so disproportionately on people being mistreated. They’re expected to regulate their reactions, communicate better, & heal, while the people responsible for the mistreatment face little pressure to change their behavior
not enough people talk about the burnout that comes from constantly dealing with unhealed adults. always being the bigger person. always managing their triggers while suppressing your own. always explaining basic respect and accountability to people stuck in survival mode. that kind of exhaustion is soul tiring. protect your peace before you lose yourself carrying what other people refuse to heal within themselves.
