Why Students Ignore Diagrams in Science and How to Fix It
Most science teachers assume students actually use the diagrams we put in textbooks and slides. But a new analysis of 66 eye-tracking studies shows something else:
Most students barely look at the diagram. They cling to the text, even when the visual is the key to understanding.
This gap explains so much:
Why high achievers build strong mental models
Why struggling learners stay stuck at surface-level recal
And why “explaining again” often doesn’t work.
A new post unpacking what the research really shows and what teachers can actually do to fix it.
It’s one of the most important (and misunderstood) issues in science education:
" how students integrate text, diagrams, arrows, legends, and labels to form meaning."
If you’re a teacher, school leader, curriculum designer, or trainer, this one matters.

Ontario teachers - don’t forget to tell any teacher candidates in your schools that they have access to the Decoding and Spelling course through @IDA_Ontario for FREE. From my experience, they are still not getting this type of learning in their teaching programs. #onted
