Sean Connery’s introduction in DR. NO (1962) became one of cinema’s most iconic moments. Director tweaked the timing of Connery’s lighter flick, letting the smoke clear before the line landed. A small adjustment that helped create movie history.
What movie has the greatest first appearance of a character?

Paul McCartney strolling across the zebra crossing outside Abbey Road Studios in London on July 23, 2018, almost 49 years after the Beatles walked it for the cover of Abbey Road. On a scorching day in the middle of the UK's record breaking summer, word got out that something was happening, and fans and tourists crowded the pavement with their phones out as Paul made his way across, wearing sandals just as he had in 1969. He was on his way inside to play a secret show for a small audience in Studio Two, where the Beatles recorded so much of their music, mixing Beatles classics with four new songs from his upcoming album Egypt Station. His daughter Mary filmed the crossing and both of them shared it online that day. The original cover was shot on August 8, 1969, by photographer Iain Macmillan, and in December 2010 the crossing became the first zebra crossing ever given Grade II listed status in England. Egypt Station came out on September 7, 2018, and became Paul's first No. 1 album in the United States since Tug of War in 1982, and his first ever to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. 🪲 The Abbey Road zebra crossing was the first zebra crossing ever to be given listed status in England. Have you ever walked across it? 🪲

In 1966, Sidney Poitier agreed to star as Detective Virgil Tibbs in In the Heat of the Night, but he wanted one thing guaranteed. If a white man slapped his character, Tibbs would slap him back, and Poitier later said he insisted the studio put in writing that the moment could not be removed from any version of the film. His demand mattered because Black characters in American movies were rarely allowed to respond physically to white characters without being punished, humiliated or killed. Poitier understood that the scene was about more than a fictional detective. It was about whether a Black man could stand his ground on screen without being forced to submit. The scene became one of the most memorable moments in American cinema. After wealthy plantation owner Eric Endicott strikes Tibbs across the face, Tibbs immediately returns the blow. Poitier later explained that accepting the slap without responding would have felt like an insult to Black people everywhere. The film was released in 1967, during a period of enormous racial tension in the United States, and the moment carried a weight audiences immediately understood. Poitier had spent years refusing roles that reduced Black people to stereotypes, becoming the first Black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964 for Lilies of the Field. He was not simply trying to become a bigger star. He was using the power he had gained to demand dignity for the characters he played. The contract story is based on Poitier's own later account, while some details of how the scene evolved have been disputed by members of the production. What is not disputed is the impact of that slap.

“Gangsta’s Paradise” is from Coolio’s 1995 album of the same name and the Dangerous Minds soundtrack. Featuring L.V. and sampling Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise,” the track reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, became Billboard’s year-end No. 1 single of 1995, and topped the charts in more than a dozen countries, making it one of the biggest rap hits of the 1990s.
