Scientists have discovered that a traditional Chinese herbal blend triggers a "self-destruct" signal in drug-resistant cancer cells. Researchers at Shaoxing University in China evaluated Huayu Wan, a formula combining two historic herbal recipes, on esophageal cancer cells that had developed resistance to the common chemotherapy drug cisplatin. The formula significantly impeded cell growth and drove the cells into ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of cell death. It achieved this by neutralizing the cells' antioxidant defenses and liberating stored iron, which allowed oxidative damage to compromise their membranes. In mice bearing chemo-resistant tumors, the treatment limited tumor growth, attracted more cancer-killing T cells into the tumors, and exhibited enhanced efficacy when paired with the immunotherapy drug anti-PD-1 compared to either treatment administered alone. Because resistance to cisplatin is a primary cause of treatment failure in esophageal cancer, identifying a method to eliminate these resilient cells is highly valuable. However, since this research has only been conducted on cells and mice, it remains unknown whether the formula is safe or effective in humans. Consequently, patients should not alter or supplement their regimens with herbs without consulting their oncologist. Clinical trials in humans are currently being planned, and the research team suggests that this iron-driven mechanism could serve as a novel strategy to combine with existing treatments.
