This is pretty good, and I want to celebrate it, but it is not perfect!

Newsflash -- No academic treats the #Ramayana as history.
Historians also care about ideas, stories, etc., for what they tell use about the values and concerns of their creators and how they change over time. We call this intellectual history, literary history, and the like.

How common is death during a marathon?
Fortunately, it is very rare.
▶️A large study of 29.3 million US marathon and half-marathon finishers (2010-2023) found:
🔴Cardiac arrest: 0.54 per 100,000 participants (about 1 in 185,000 runners)
🔴Cardiac death: 0.20 per 100,000 participants (about 1 in 500,000 runners)
🟢Importantly, survival after cardiac arrest has improved dramatically over the last two decades, largely because of better on-site CPR and defibrillation.

Formalizing the Stacks Project is a huge service to the mathematical community. (I have not seen or are an expert in Lean, so I can't say about the quality of the formalization, though -- I hope others can comment on that.)
Perhaps other AI companies can take notes here, of how a company can work on training their models and improving their products by actually producing value for the scientific community, instead of the bulldozer approach of slop drops.
Congrats to @axiommathai on this one!

Some thoughts on AI, theoretical physics, careers and the question of whether this is a good time to do a PhD in theoretical physics (which I will just call ‘theory’ for shorthand). Stimulated by a conversation with one of my undergrads. 1/9

Mr. Kannan, with all due respect, I don’t think your tweet fully captures the reality of professional badminton.
A first-round exit at Wimbledon earns £80,000. Winning the China Open, one of badminton’s richest tournaments, earns $140,000. Lose in the first round? Just $2,000.
Yet our expenses are largely similar. Travel, coaches, physios, trainers and support teams. I’ve had long conversations with Rohan Bopanna about this very disparity.
I agree that established athletes should strive to be financially independent. I’ve been fortunate to have wonderful sponsors, but not everyone has that privilege. That’s also why organisations like @OGQ_India are so important.
More importantly, if you read Mihir’s article in full, you’ll see that younger players had to compete without coaches, while several withdrew from tournaments.
I can find ways to fund my tour. But what about the 18-year-old chasing her dreams, hoping to become the next Sindhu or Lakshya?
And I must acknowledge the tremendous support the Government of India and @Media_SAI have extended to athletes like us over the years. Their contribution to Indian sport cannot be understated.
Accountability is absolutely necessary. But supporting athletes isn’t bleeding the system. It’s investing in India’s sporting future. And we shouldn’t lose sight of that.
How long will our elite athletes, who are professionals, bleed the system.
I mean, can not a PV Sindhu or Lakshya Sen fund own tours.
Look at a sport like tennis, players get nothing.
I will not find fault with @Media_SAI here

☀️ Call for #PhD Students 🌏

Are you interested in exploring why stars are magnetically active, how their activity shapes planetary and exoplanetary space environments, and how we can forecast space weather?
I am seeking a couple of PhD students to work with me at the Raman Research Institute on one or more of the following broad research areas:
- Solar and stellar magnetohydrodynamics
- Star–planet interactions and their impact on exoplanetary atmospheric evolution
- Space weather forecasting
Prospective candidates must meet the institutional eligibility criteria and apply through the online admissions portal linked below.
The ideal candidate should have excellent understanding of basic physics. Experience in one or more of the following would be particularly valuable: mathematical methods in physics; computer programming -- especially numerical solutions of partial differential equations, and data analysis -- particularly in observational astronomy.
Applicants should include a statement of purpose outlining their relevant experience, research interests and motivation for pursuing one or more of these scientific problems

Recently, a university founder told me “My return on investment is far better when I bring film stars to campus than when I invite experts to deliver guest lectures”. He goes on to say “A Daler Mehendi Concert will have every newspaper cover us. We also give free VIP passes to the media people and their families”.
What happened at @MRU_Hyderabad is a reminder of this disturbing trend. They are known to be the preferred venue for film launches. The institution reportedly even declared a holiday to enable students to watch a movie.
It explains much of what is wrong with higher education today. It is easier to bring a film star for two hours than build an institution of academic excellence over twenty years. Sadly, it works. Gullible and start Struck students and anxious parents often mistake visibility for credibility.
The frustrating part is how Universities adapting these shortcuts thrive. The hard questions around faculty quality, teaching, research and student outcomes remain unanswered.
While all this happens, @ugc_india and @EduMinOfIndia is a silent spectator!
It appears that some guy has created a website iopscienceiop.org and posted a paper that is formatted to look like it us from the Astrophysical Journal with several big names as co-authors. @Kaju_Nut Note the missing dot after iopscience in the URL.
