A tribute to fossil fuels. (Thread)
The thermometer showed -38C here this morning (-47 with wind chill). At 6 am, the furnace warmed the house to 20C. It does this every morning thanks to the natural gas that is piped into my house and burned in that miracle appliance 1/x

By now, it should be obvious that the obsession with Europe has little to do with Canadians' collective prosperity and everything to do with ideology.

Yes, it's interesting that he's viewed as a pragmatist, when so many of his moves have a strong ideological bent

KPMG has posted 15 senior accountant positions in downtown Toronto, paying $80,613 to $95,000 annually, with an LMIA request to hire foreign workers.
In a country where Canadians are struggling to find jobs, we're being told there aren't enough qualified accountants?
Toronto is full of accounting professionals.
Something isn't adding up here.
How can we justify this in the current Canadian job market?
Carney says we have a “tight” relationship with the EU? So why do we need to be an associate member? Why not work on getting CETA ratified by the other countries if we’re so tight?
What benefits do average Canadians get from this tight relationship?
Carney is a fraud.

Honestly, yes. Most companies shareholders, and likely boards of directors as well, would have a problem with the CEO needing to take 70 people on business trips and spending $2500/head on airplane food alone, from the business account. And especially so when the company is struggling to run profitably.
It would be one thing if we were looking at something like the cost of hosting fancy dinners for high profile customers, which in the context here would be something like hosting world leaders, but that's not at all what we're looking at here.
Honestly, I was almost going to drop the 'I'm old enough to remember' line, but you don't even have to be very old to remember when the '$16 glass of orange juice' scandal was enough to cost Bev Oda her job. And that was over a few thousand dollars that she reimbursed when called out for being an inappropriate display of opulence and excess...

If I don’t like what a CEO does I don’t buy their products or invest in their company. I have no choice but to pay for Carney’s clearly excessive, expensive lifestyle. A true leader leads by example. When taxes become voluntary please let me know.
You’re trying to make it sound like he personally consumed $1m worth of food.
The food bill includes the entire entourage, which on international trips is upwards of 70 people.
Do you have any complaint as a shareholder of a company if the CEO expenses nice meals or do you expect him to eat slop?
Be serious.
The more I think about this, the more it pisses me off.
No, lady - don't let them steal. In fact, I pay a lot of taxes to multiple levels of government whose job it is to NOT let people get away with stealing.
In fact, your fucking salary is predicated on your role in maintaining a functioning society, one of the foundational tenets of which is that people not be excused from going around and taking other people's shit.
So no, you useless moron, I do not accept your privileged, galaxy-brain take of "let them steal." Do your goddamn job.

You can just do all these things. The secret is you just have to be on the right side of the European Commission."

Of course not. Canada’s Liberal government doesn’t properly vet the millions of scam artists, aka immigrants we let into Canada.

Interpol has confirmed the arrest of Punjab gangster Amritpal Singh Bath in Canada after a routine police stop reportedly exposed his identity. Bath, who is wanted in nearly 20 criminal cases, was caught on October 8 when Surrey Police stopped a vehicle in the Whalley area of Surrey, British Columbia, after noticing erratic driving.
Police initially intended to check the driver for possible impairment. Bath was sitting in the passenger seat and allegedly identified himself as Harpreet Singh, presenting an identity document under that name. However, the document appeared suspicious, prompting officers to investigate further.
According to reports, a database search revealed that Bath was wanted under an Interpol Red Notice. He was detained and handed over to the Canada Border Services Agency, where he reportedly remains in custody.
Surrey Police spokesperson Ian MacDonald said authorities had not known Bath was in Canada. It is also unclear whether the driver was aware of his identity.
A resident of Mianpur village in Punjab's Tarn Taran district, Bath is wanted in cases involving murder, attempted murder, drug trafficking and extortion.
Punjab Police has confirmed the development and reportedly started the paperwork to bring him back to India. He is expected to face deportation or extradition proceedings.

Home invasions will continue to increase. A key factor is zero fear of consequences. Perps know a liberal judiciary will find a ‘social’ reason to excuse the inexcusable. In jail there is a chance for rehab. But walking free means more mayhem.

🇪🇺 Mark Carney today said integrating with the EU on a monetary, regulatory, parliamentary & judicial level, will deepen Canadian sovereignty.
⛓️ Being forced to comply to foreign laws, taxation, carbon prices, digital ID & human migration that we can't even democratically vote on, is not freedom.
🦅 We are already being told be were born on unceded territory & that our entire democracy & economy must give veto power to 619 First Nation Chiefs. Including giving tens of billions of dollars, every year.
💉 During covid-19 Canada implemented vaccine passports that prevented people from leaving Canada & travelling by plane or train domestically, if they didn't take mRNA shots.
🪶 The excuse for the live ammunition, multi hour massacre of 300+ healthy ostriches at the Universal Ostrich Farm, was that Canada had to comply with World Health Organization mandates.
📜 So all of this matters. Our democratic freedom is being massacred by 1,000 cuts.
🗳️ The more we surrender our democratic rights, the faster we become slaves to foreign powers.
⛓️ How Canada is being treated, is how a vassal state would be treated.
Canada should not get into bed with Ursula von der Leyen.
She was never elected by a single voter. She was nominated by heads of government and confirmed behind closed doors in Brussels. You can't vote her out. Neither can anyone in Europe. That alone should end the conversation, but it gets worse.
This is the woman who negotiated billions in vaccine contracts with Pfizer's CEO by text message, then refused to show the texts. The EU's own court ruled against her. Billions in public money, decided in private chats, hidden from the public. And she survived it. She always survives it.
She survived a no-confidence vote. She survived the German defence ministry scandals, the missing data, the consultant contracts. She survives everything because the system she runs isn't built to hold her accountable. It's built to protect her.
Now look at what she's selling us. Digital ID wallets for every citizen. Officially voluntary today. But once that infrastructure exists, governments always find new uses for it. That's not a conspiracy, that's just how power works. And "ever closer association" means Canada falls in line behind EU rules on digital ID, data, and AI. Rules we didn't write. Rules our Parliament doesn't control.
Carney calls this "more sovereignty." Let's be honest about what it is. It's trading dependence on Washington for dependence on Brussels. That's not sovereignty. That's changing landlords.
And here's the part nobody in Ottawa wants to say out loud: there is no vote. No referendum. No say for the Canadian people. The federal cabinet can sign this and ratify it on its own. The same people who lecture us about democracy are cutting a deal with an unelected leader, in a city most Canadians will never visit, about rules that will govern our daily lives.
Europe's farmers already figured her out. They drove their tractors into Brussels because her green rules were strangling them. Her own member states grumble about how much power she's grabbed for herself. Even the people who work under her call her "Queen Ursula."
So why is Canada crawling into bed with her? Because Carney wants a headline about standing up to Trump, and Ursula wants another country in her orbit. Both of them get what they want. The Canadian people get the bill.
We don't need a new master. We need our own house in order.
Canada deserves better than Ursula's bed.

“Ottawa is becoming the owner, the funder, the customer and the regulator of the same companies.”
There’s a word for it: socialism.
This is a thoughtful piece.
I'm genuinely happy for Cohere that they're growing and scaling, but I will admit I've been asking myself a lot of bigger picture questions since this was announced, starting with: what problem does this solve?
Cohere isn't short of capital. Schwarz, Nvidia and Aramco invested. And the $1.68B announced comes after $240M in federal compute funding and stakes from PSP, EDC and BDC in earlier funding rounds.
So if it's not capital, what is the goal? The AI minister himself was quoted in a Betakit article saying the stake gives Ottawa "a seat at the table to control" this technology.
What does that mean? What are the terms of the deal? Is the intent here really for the Government of Canada to control the technology that Cohere is developing? I think Canadians deserve to know what kind of control is contemplated.
Beyond this specific deal, the bigger picture points to an evolving pattern in Canada’s industrial policy.
Equity stakes in private companies have historically only been taken by the Government of Canada in times of crisis to rescue strategically important companies. Most lost taxpayers money, e.g. GM, Trans Mountain, de Havilland. Cohere isn't in crisis, which makes this feel like a new policy direction, not a rescue.
$1.6B in Cohere. A $500M tech fund built to take equity in tech companies. A $1.75B government VC plan. A proposed sovereign wealth fund. Canada Growth Fund. On top of EDC and BDC and our pension funds which have a mandate to invest public dollars.
Ottawa is becoming the owner, the funder, the customer and the regulator of the same companies. That trend towards state-led capitalism is hard to reverse and Canadians should be asking questions abut the long term implications of that direction on our economic competitiveness.
Big picture: Canada wins when markets reward builders, not when ministers pick them.
The better path we might consider is focusing on making Canada the best place in the world to build and scale. Competitive taxes. Faster approvals. Real AI adoption.
We should be focusing on ensuring our most successful companies won't need a federal cheque to stay.
