As good a time as any to share a Yiddish translation just published, “Vos I. I. Zinger Hot Gezen in Di Neger Kabareys in Harlem” (“What IJ Singer Saw in the Black Cabarets in Harlem”). A somewhat unnerving reportage from 1932 about Black life in America. ingeveb.org/texts-and-transl…

Singer, most known for his literature (and the brother of the famed Isaac Bashevis Singer), drew from his preconceptions of Blackness to describe an essentialized portrait of modern Black culture. He offers a highly telling perspective from a short-term eastern European visitor.

Even at the dawn of the Nazi Regime, as he laments that “The Hitlerists” are restricting Jews from becoming “authentic Germans,” he sees the trajectory of Blackness in America as something much different. More about the translation in my accompanying essay ingeveb.org/blog/race-uproot…

We are incredibly excited to introduce the incoming cohort of fellows for the 2024-25 academic year! CJH is proud to provide a platform where these emerging scholars can thrive, contributing significantly to our understanding of Jewish history & its ongoing impact on the world.

The campaign to depose university presidents is also an effort to distract people from this
My friend’s mom in Gaza eats a piece of bread and a hot pepper. That’s her meal of the day. She hasn’t been able to find flour and so her family has gone without eating for a few days until someone found a bag for them. My other friend’s sister hasn’t drank any water in two days.

Yesterday, Local 33 Bargaining Committee Member Arita Acharya got to sit down with @POTUS and @SenSanders to talk about organizing our union for graduate workers at @Yale. POTUS is right, we are building the economy of the future, and it will be union!
The presence of a union means there is democracy. And organizing or joining a union — that’s democracy in action. Today, @SenSanders and I met with young worker leaders to discuss their fight for better pay and benefits. They are building the economy of the future.

The New York Times horribly misdiagnosed the south Williamsburg section of the marathon in their preview article yesterday, just saying

Up this weekend: the annual Southern Jewish Historical Society conference in Charleston, SC, where I’ll be addressing how Jewish political engagement existed alongside—and contributed to—broader ideologies of the post-Civil War American state

No spoilers, but the @MSJE_NOLA “Mayors Map” will certainly make an appearance

Biden now needs to cancel the £12.50 I owe to the University of Cambridge ultimate frisbee team, a debt I am remarkably still getting pestered about since my study abroad semester there in 2016

Besides being unimaginably terrible for people with uteruses, this also is the starkest example yet of christianity's dangerous influence over the modern Republican Party--the party that for a century has been dogmatically anti-statist

Unless I meant to cite Foner’s less read work about the pristine nature of our nation’s lakes during the Johnson/Nixon years
"Ecclesiastical Haughtiness, Pathetic Jewish Humility, and the Untold History of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine" any bites from editors?

What we're reading this weekend: a fabulous new article by @morrow_spitzer about African American perceptions of Jews in the postbellum South. You can check it out in the Journal of American Jewish History via the link below: muse-jhu-edu.nuncio.cofc.edu…

Clearly Jews were engrained in southern societies, a fact that is often celebrated or marveled at, but rarely examined closer. To critically study Jews in America means to also recognize how Jews, like their white Protestant neighbors, perpetuated racism

When James Baldwin wrote in 1967 that “Negroes Are Anti-Semitic Because They’re Anti-White,” he was not the first to articulate this sentiment. Black people in the American South were gesturing at Jewish whiteness a century earlier. Read the article to learn more!!
