The MAGA base is a minority group in American politics whose needs we must all apparently bend over backwards to accommodate. This was the "lesson" many journalism leaders took from 2016 and are now fighting the same war. It is nuts.

Dear school administrators: Before telling teen reporters that you can't comment b/c of FERPA, do your homework. FERPA only protects the privacy of personally identifiable information in a student’s education record. It doesn't prevent you from being accountable to the community.

Amazon has a new low-cost health service called Clinic.
But there's a hidden price: Your privacy.
Before you can sign up, you have to sign away some of your HIPAA protections to Amazon.
You agreed to what?

Good morning to readers.
Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands. Please RT this thread. It’s an important one.
Some news: I’m leaving NPR as part of the layoffs that dramatically cut the org's workforce.
I’ve decided to go back into Ukraine to keep reporting.
But this time, alone.

Don’t Say Gay won’t protect gay kids from anti-lgbt abuse.
But it WILL protect straight kids from having to learn that anti-lgbt abuse is wrong.
And that's the point.
Advocates warned that the "Don't Say Gay" law was just the beginning & now we're seeing the dangerous expansion. I stand with our LGBTQ+ children against these hateful attacks from Florida Republicans. apnews.com/article/florida-l…

3) I ask ChatGPT to rewrite my writing with 7 different "goals":
1. More concise
2. More emphatic
3. More humorous
4. More descriptive
5. More persuasive
6. More informative
7. More action-oriented
This one is my personal favorite.
Great for rewriting emails/messages.

At a high level, ChatGPT is horrible at coming up with things "from scratch."
• "Write me a Twitter thread on X"
• "Draft an email about Y"
• "Come up with ideas about Z"
When given prompts like this, ChatGPT has to make too many arbitrary decisions—which means poor output.

From the beginning, I made 1 crucial mistake with ChatGPT:
I expected it to "think" rather than "do."
This means I fed it poorly written, 1-sentence prompts and expected some magical output.
But poor instructions = poor results.
So here's how I reframed it:
This is awesome news — and I find myself... frustrated.
And yet, hopeful.
We could've been 15.
We could've been 16.
Until this week, we could've been 17.
But Hawaii, New Jersey and West Virginia got there first.
A 🧵, friends.

Everybody say "Congratulations West Virginia!" 🥳🎉 Governor Jim Justice just signed the Student Journalist Press Freedom Protection Act, making West Virginia the 17th New Voices state! loom.ly/3VbnbHE
...to do real, important journalism without fear of arbitrary censorship because they weren't talking about the "right" or "permitted" things.
I appreciate you sticking around for this 🧵 — we've been at it for six years in Albany, and we're not going anywhere. (26/)
If it takes 6 or a dozen more, we're going to get it done. We're building support and gaining allies — I'm hopeful for some things on the horizon.
If Hawaii, New Jersey and West Virginia can do it, #NewYork can too - and must.
Because student voices matter. #newvoices (/end)
