For four billion years, every virus on earth was written by evolution. Last week, sixteen were written by AI. Here's how they got made. A model generated thousands of viral genomes in an afternoon. Stanford picked 302, placed an order with a company that prints DNA, and the DNA arrived in the mail. Sixteen came alive and killed bacteria that had already survived every natural virus thrown at them. The hardest step was the paperwork. Screening those orders is voluntary in the United States. A DNA synthesis company can ask who you are and what you're building, or skip it, and both choices are legal. That is the only point in the entire process where another human being has to say yes. Everything upstream of that is free and infinite now. The model can write a million more tonight. Its weights are public, its training data is public, and the successor version was trained on human genomes too. These sixteen point at bacteria instead of people because the team deleted human-infecting viruses from the training data first. Their safeguard was a deletion. Deletions are reversible. Sixteen new forms of life got printed and mailed across Palo Alto this year, and the law had nothing to say about it.
JUST IN: Scientists warn of “urgent” biosecurity concerns after AI successfully designs 16 new viruses capable of replicating inside cells.

When presenting to executives, ask yourself: what does your audience care about? What do you want them to think, feel and do after hearing your presentation? Then get to the point 👉

This.
My Anti-To-Do List (15 things I want to avoid on a daily basis) 1. Do not complain about anything. If the thing is within your control, then go do something about it. If the thing is out of your control, then it's just a waste of energy to complain about it.

This is horrifying. There are some good tips on how to stay safe in thread.
Here’s how I used AI to clone a 60 Minutes correspondent’s voice to trick a colleague into handing over her passport number. I cloned Sharyn’s voice then manipulated the caller ID to show Sharyn’s name with a spoofing tool. The hack took 5 minutes total for me to steal the info.

I’ve been breathing sustainable finance and extinction rebellion and fire and flood in same year in Australia, America, food shortages. Evidence evidence. And this is the first billboard I see in Ottawa, Ontario - straight off the plane… #wtfcanada

I've shared tons of free and inexpensive material for learning machine learning. Combined, their value is easily greater than a $145,092 machine learning degree. Here are the best ones:

Respect comes before trust comes before great cross-functional collaboration.
The term I've used most often so far this year as been 'cross functional teamwork'. And I reckon I'm going to be repeating it and repeating it for the rest of this year and beyond. True, respectful cross-functional collaboration is the secret sauce and its ridiculously rare.
