Tomorrow, Friday, October 9th, we will have our next #illustratingMath seminar online at 9am Pacific / 12pm Eastern / 6pm Central Europe. Things will be slightly different than usual: Instead of Show&Ask and a talk, we will have a panel on "The Role of Illustration." Tune in!

ALT Poster for "On the Role of Illustration in a Large Language Landscape," a discussion on mathematical illustration and AI. Features three speakers: Edmund Harriss (Univ. of Arkansas), Katherine E. Stange (CU Boulder), and Chaim Goodman-Strauss (MoMath), each shown in a circular portrait. Event details: Friday, Oct 9 (9 AM Pacific / 12 PM Eastern / 6 PM Central Europe) on Zoom. Includes a QR code to join and links to illustratingmath.org for the Illustrating Math Seminar Online. Above the text is a photo of colorful geometric 3D shapes.
It took more than 3,000 emails, close to 80 hours of work, and turned further hairs white, but it is great to finally hold the printed proceedings from this year's @BridgesMathart conference in hand! Kudos to Eve Torrence (managing editor), the other editors, and the authors!
The last talk for today is by Fahreddin Basegmez, who tells us about "Symmetries of Prime Factors." (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2…) He presents a fascinating zoo of intricate #MathArt shape assemblies. (3/3)
Next, Loe Feijs tells us about "Visual Representation of Inhibition for Phyllotaxis." (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2…) A fascinating journey, starting from Fibonacci Numbers and sunflower shapes, taking us all the way to the "Inhibiscus" shape. (2/3)
The second session in the afternoon at the @BridgesMathart conference starts with Tuan Dung Do, who speaks about "Visual Illusions in the Hyperbolic Plane." (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2…) Some illusions might work better with their tool: cs.uwaterloo.ca/~bdo/project… (1/3)ti
Short paper session in the afternoon at the @BridgesMathart conference has:
Marta Kopyt "Math through books", Gary Lester "Art as Math Representation", David Reimann "LEGO to communicate Math", and Chris John "Making Kolam Accessible". Wonderful ideas for playful #MathArt.
The second plenary talk is by Claire Moriarty, who speaks about "Semiotics, Ease, and Elegance: Oliver Byrne’s Elements of Euclid." (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2…) It is wonderful to learn about the (historical) background of this famous and richly illustrated book. (2/2)
The first plenary talk at the @BridgesMathart conference today is by children’s book author Amy Alznauer. (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2…) She wrote a book on Ramanujan and has a new one on Marjorie Rice, which looks great! You can find it here:

The final activity for this day at the @BridgesMathart conference is the "Formal Music Night". It is led by "The Irish Dance Experience" and takes place in the wonderful Quadrangle Building of the Galway University campus. We get to try a Céilí and a Riverdance. Great fun!
The third and final talk of the day is given by Robin Houston, who is looking into the mathematics of designing "Caltrops". (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2…) He shows us a surprising variety of 3D-printed caltrops. (3/3)
