The Minnetonka Police Department has officially launched Minnesota’s first Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, unlocking a new layer of visibility, speed and safety for public safety response across the city.
With this launch, Minnetonka is making real-time aerial intelligence a core part of their emergency response model. Drones are now deployed by remote pilots directly to 911 calls, often arriving before ground units, to assess scenes, deliver live intel, and guide officers toward safer, more informed decisions.
The results? Faster response, reduced risk and smarter resource allocation. In similar programs across the country, drones are resolving around 25% of calls without requiring an in-person response, allowing officers to stay available for the calls that need them most.
But what makes this milestone matter even more is how it’s being done. With community trust and transparency built in from day one, every flight is purpose-driven, logged, and publicly viewable through a community-facing dashboard, establishing a new standard for accountability in emerging tech.
At Axon, we’re proud to work alongside agencies like @mtkapd that are building next-generation DFR programs with Axon Air and @SkydioHQ in order to protect more lives in more places.
