Houdini Engine on usage-based licensing, Spot fleet that scales from zero: ~$0.02-0.05 per task, $0 idle 🤯
Downsides: Spot sometimes makes you wait, and IAM is pain. Wouldn’t have survived it without Claude.

How it works:
Houdini Engine: $0.75/h, only while the task runs
AWS starts a Spot machine and shuts it down after 5 idle min
Houdini installs from AWS’s conda channel in ~1 min, no custom image
the job is plain YAML (Open Job Description): “run hython script.py”
My wife applied for an Indian eVisa in October, but there have been no updates since.
All four of us — my wife, our two sons, and I — applied at the same time. Our children received their eVisas within 2 days, and I received mine 3 days ago, but my wife’s application is still pending.
We’ve tried contacting the eVisa Help Desk multiple times — only receiving automated replies saying “Wait.” Phone calls offered no help, and our email to the Consulate of India in New York went unanswered.
Our flight to India is tomorrow (Nov 9), and no one can provide an update or timeline. If her visa isn’t issued soon, we may have to cancel our trip.

I wanted to have a scrollable facade for so long until the right moment came in. 🔥
I was curious to try some new tools and the shot from #signalis game with a scene based on the Isle of the Dead painting by Arnold Böcklin felt like a good candidate. The plan was to do it start-to-finish in #ComfyUI, but quality issues made me fall back to the "classic" Houdini+Redshift+Nuke workflow. Still, generative fill in Photoshop, creative upscale in #Magnific, and some comp elements from #AnimDiff helped a lot in the process.
It was worth 2 weeks of waiting for the prints to arrive #signalis
