A major standoff is unfolding in Poland tonight over the Constitutional Tribunal. Judges elected by parliament, with the support of Prime Minister Donald Tuskโs pro-EU, centrist government, moved to take control of the courtโs leadership and suspended its president, a PiS appointee.
The move is part of Tuskโs effort to reverse changes made under the previous right-wing PiS government, which critics accused of politicizing the judiciary. Police secured the court grounds after protesters tried to breach the fence, detaining three people. President Karol Nawrocki, a PiS ally, even cut short his trip to Senegal and rushed back to Poland.
Prime Minister Tusk says heโs working to restore the rule of law, while PiS accuses his government of staging a coup.

Coup d'รฉtat underway in Poland after EU-aligned Prime Minister Donald Tusk sent police forces to the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw right after President Nawrocki left for Senegal for a diplomatic visit.
Nawrocki is currently headed back to Poland.
The President of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw, Bogdan Swieczkowski, was suspended and possibly arrested. He is a known support of President Nawrocki.
Several right-wing Polish MPs and their supports are reportedly on their way to the Constitutional Tribunal to defend the institution from being taken over by Donald Tusk.
Warsaw's police forces are preventing the President of the Constitutional Tribunal Bogdan ลwiฤczkowski, members of the Sejm and protesters from entering the Constitutional Court.
