One ongoing frustration is the lack of effort I see being put towards near-term, achievable crash projects to do good with AI at a national scale, whether those efforts are by the AI labs or by policymakers & NGOs. Some obvious ideas to explore suggested by the data we have so far: universal tutoring to support classroom learning, second opinions on healthcare, financial literacy/scam avoidance, and making government services easy to access. These are hard problems, and I know because over the past 20 years I have worked extensively on building tutoring and financial literacy programs, which were always limited by existing technology. Now, real gains are likely achievable with AI, which should be a big deal. Yes, you would want to do careful design and studies before rolling things out. And yes, those efforts might fail. But, if done right, national programs could lead to big gains in public good for seemingly intractable problems. And they don't require AIs beyond current models to pull off.

Bill Gates just warned AI could trigger mass unemployment In a super long (6,000-word) post that @BillGates just published, he says "Even under the best circumstances, the transition to this new AI era will be one of the most turbulent times in human history" Some takeawys - AI is moving too fast for the usual technology-transition playbook. Unlike PCs, AI already runs on devices people own, communicates in natural language, and can learn from the same materials used to train humans, so adoption does not require decades of new hardware, software, and user retraining. - He would probably support a credible global effort to slow AI development, but does not believe geopolitical and economic competition will allow one. - His biggest economic fear is permanent job destruction, not temporary unemployment. Gates argues that AI can substitute directly for human cognition, putting entry- and mid-level work in sales, customer support, software engineering, paralegal work, finance, healthcare and other fields at risk, while increasingly capable robots could start competing for construction and hospitality tasks before 2030. - The decisive point comes when AI becomes reliable enough to work without human checking, because removing the human then becomes economically attractive. - He sees AI as a force multiplier for both attackers and powerful institutions. Lower-skill criminals could gain capabilities for cyberattacks, fraud, deepfakes and potentially biological threats, while governments could use cheaper autonomous weapons, surveillance and opinion manipulation; beyond misuse by humans, - Gates also leaves open the longer-term risk that increasingly capable AI systems could act against human interests. - He worries that always-available, agreeable AI companions could reduce the difficult social interactions through which children build resilience, while heavy reliance on AI for intellectual work could weaken critical thinking; at the same time, he argues that carefully designed AI tutors could improve education by preserving the student's own cognitive effort instead of simply supplying answers. - He also proposes a "Human Reserved" category for work society deliberately keeps human, and taxes on AI tokens and robots to slow some automation.

In the fight to defend openness in AI, the Marin project is a precious demonstration of openness in model training, with open code, data, recipes, even experimental results. Releasing AI research openly used to be the norm; I'm grateful for @percyliang's open lab approach.
🚢 Marin 535B-A23B started training this week! As usual, the whole process is open. Voyage plan: pretraining (80%) + midtraining (20%) on 18.75T tokens on 11 x GB200 NVL72 for ~3 months (2.7e24 FLOPs). Post-training will follow. Before kicking off the run, we trained a 4-rung scaling ladder from 1.6B-A61M (48B tokens) to 27.7B-A1.2B (926B tokens) to debug issues, and to make a forecast of our hero run. This is by far our biggest run, so definitely expecting the unexpected.

Kimi K3 just fixed 15 critical security bugs that Codex and Fable refused because of “cyber guardrails.” There’s no reason to limit American models on tasks that Chinese models handle without issue. We’re only making ourselves less competitive.
I have a report full of security issues of a software I'm working on. Codex won't fix them because of Cyber guardrails Fable won't fix them because of Cyber guardrails Kimi K3 fixed them all. No restrictions, just gets the job done. This will end badly for OpenAI & Anthropic.

I don’t think you understand what ChatGPT Voice unlocks I went on a 4 hour hike yesterday. Through the northern California redwoods. Got more work done in those 4 hours talking to Voice through my AirPods then I do in 8 hours at my desk Work can be done ANYWHERE now 45 minute drive back using self driving? Now 45 minutes I can talk to Voice and work on side projects 20 minutes in the cafe? I can sit and talk to Voice and when I get home I have drafts on my computer for my newsletter for the next month Being able to just use your voice to talk to a super intelligence that controls your computer is unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before I don’t even care that the voice sounds human like, or you can interrupt it, or any of the wild advancements they made to the tech It’s the fact that it can control my computer, meaning all I need to get incredible work done is talk through my AirPods anywhere in the world that is the major game changer for me I don’t think people truly understand the implications of this yet Why even have a desk or monitor anymore. Work can be done ANYWHERE now The key is your set up: 1. Choose one device (preferably an always on desktop) as your main “headquarters” device all your work gets done on 2. Get the ChatGPT app on all your other devices (iPhone, iPad, laptops, Mac Minis) 3. Set up ‘connections’ in your settings so that all your ‘node’ devices can control your ‘headquarters’ device 4. Go legit anywhere in the world. Turn on Voice. Ask it to brief you on your projects, give you a recommended next step, then spin up new threads to do work I really don’t think work looks the same moving forward.

7 CONCLUSION: BRIDGING THE GENAI DIVIDE Organizations that successfully cross the GenAI Divide do three things differently: they buy rather than build, empower line managers rather than central labs, and select tools that integrate deeply while adapting over time. ....
This is that original MIT report that said 95% of AI pilots fail and which spooked investors across US Stockmarket. The reports says, most companies are stuck, because 95% of GenAI pilots produce zero ROI, while a small 5% win by using systems that learn, plug into real workflows, and improve with use. Teams keep buying or building static tools that demo well but cannot remember context, adapt, or fit daily operations, and this report maps exactly how the few winners do it differently. 🧪 How they ran the study They combined a review of 300+ public implementations with 52 structured interviews and 153 senior‑leader surveys across January to June 2025, which gives the patterns below real footing. 🧵 Read on 👇

Insightful, damning video on the clueless, superficial nature of Trump's tariff explanation, and the administration's estimate of Trump's coming inflation on imported goods : 10%! They don't even know how to spell math, note the clueless asterisks at 7:50 youtu.be/j04IAbWCszg

I believe that every person and profession will benefit from an AI co-pilot that amplifies our human abilities. I wrote Impromptu with GPT-4 to not just encourage a familiarity with GPT-4, but to explore the possibilities we can create through its use. nitter.gq/reidhoffman/status/163…
I wrote a new book with @OpenAI’s latest, most powerful large language model. It’s called Impromptu: Amplifying our Humanity through AI. This, as far as I know, is the first book written with GPT-4. Here’s how it all began… impromptubook.com/wp-content…
