Russian occupation brings hunger, terror and death. Oleshky is a European city in Ukraine’s Kherson region. It has lived under Russian occupation since February 2022. More than 6,000 civilians are trapped in and around the city. About 200 of them are children. No food convoy has reached them since May 26. Russia blocks aid and evacuation. They are starving. Using starvation as a weapon is a war crime. To those who ask why Ukraine does not just give Russia the land it demands, the answer is Oleshky. Our people live on that land. We were honored to welcome the incredible Katheryn Winnick @katherynwinnick For years, Katheryn has used her voice to keep Ukraine visible to the world — speaking about our struggle, our resilience, and the reality of Russia’s war. As a UNITED24 @u24.gov.ua ambassador and co-founder of The Winnick Foundation, she has also turned that voice into tangible support for Ukrainians. In a very literal sense, she helps carry the light of truth about Ukraine. That is why we presented Katheryn with a symbolic portrait of a Lantern Keeper, created by artist @neivanmade — a person who does not allow the world to forget or look away, and who keeps the real struggle between good and evil visible through a grey curtain covered with lotus flowers, a symbol of oblivion and forgetting. Portraits from this series are already held by Sean Penn, Joe Lindsley, and other friends of Ukraine — people who, each in their own way, continue to shine a light on Ukraine every day. 250 years ago, a great dream became reality. A dream of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” But freedom is never passive. Freedom is courage, service, sacrifice, and daily participation. Stephen Mellnik, Nicholas Oresko, Michael Strank, Myron Diduryk, and countless other Ukrainians and Ukrainian Americans who fought for the United States remind us that the sky stands only because there are people ready to defend it. They prove that freedom is the most precious thing we have. For centuries, Ukraine was also a forbidden dream. Today, our nation is fighting for the right to live, to create, to give the world ideas, technologies, the fruits of our fertile land, and the faith that good and evil still exist. Thank you, America, for standing with Ukraine all the way to victory. And thank you to the American people for proving, generation after generation, that great dreams are worth fighting for.
