I’ve done restoration work on a few of these homes in the Crossville area. Fascinating history. The best stonework in the area was done in this time period.

Good example of quintessential drystone wall performance Despite imperfect joinery, this terrace holds back many tons of dirt and tree roots because of a couple key things: Water being able to pass through easily Soil/grass grade coming over the cap (very traditional)

Some process shots of these stone stairs. Solid stone is best because it’s interlocking, and becomes structural beyond the mortar. I had thought of a lot of different ways to have a guide for the sides but just ended up eyeballing them. The curve was too weird.

Final pics of the drystone bridge. Wasn’t really happy with the finished product. Client wanted gravel I wanted cobblestones. oh well, still looks cool. You can drive a car over it, and it survived being underwater during hurricane Helene. The Roman arch is undefeated.

Lost another laborer this week. I think I need to accept my fate as a the dreaded solo “craftsman” contractor. The reality is working solo is so much more enjoyable. Only reason I try to hire is because of the social pressure to scale.

Hand cut a trail along our creek last weekend. Digging wild rose and brambles up by hand is hard, but satisfying, permanent, and looks better than bush hogging. All brush was cut flat and laid in dead hedges along hill contours and trails.

Pigs leave no stone unturned. I'm guessing this was an old farm trash pile. Rocks, cow bones and barb wire

Setting giant caps for these columns without machinery. Slower but more controllable this way. The client was excited and had to come help.

This conversation has me thinking about this book. My parents were back to the landers I didn't know what the meant, I just knew we were different some how. They still are on the land I'm doing the same with my family But alot of their friends gave up along the way
I deeply regret buying a “homestead property”, and wish we had just bought a more garden friendly lot in a walkable place with more kids.

If you don’t believe in fate how do you explain this fit 😂 Yesterday I could not find the right stone.. Nothing comes in regular shapes in stonework. There are patterns and rules but you are always guided by the stones natural shape..it’s a delicate dance.
