UPDATE: A United Nations commission concluded in a report published on Monday, Oct. 26 that Israel has committed coordinated and organized war crimes against humanity in Palestinian territories, namely Gaza and West Bank. The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory including East Jerusalem, and Israel (COI OPTEJI) stated in the document that “... Israeli authorities and forces have committed the crime against humanity of other inhumane acts, in particular causing serious injury to body and to mental or physical health against the civilian population in the West Bank since 7 October 2023.” Among the issues and evidence discussed in the report, gender and age-based violence were cited in particular as acts that constitute “a widespread and systemic attack against” Palestinian people. Rape and other sexual violence were done as a “pattern of collective punishment” in efforts to expel and humiliate Palestinians, while bodily and mental harm were done against children because of their national identity. The commission then emphasized the Palestinians’ right to self-determination amid unlawful occupation. | Mikaella Veraces
