Horrible phrases:
Let’s touch base in the new year
Let’s circle back in the new year
Let’s park this until the new year
A more honest phrase:
Look it’s been a long 2023 and I’m really very tired. I’m sure we both don’t particularly want to start any new work before Christmas. If you absolutely have to, send me an email around 12th January (please god don’t email me on the 2nd January, I won’t warm to that at all) and we’ll perhaps chat about it then.

As a straight woman, as you get older, men who only fancy girls under twenty-five stop fancying you. That is literally the only thing you lose. And that is what the entire anti-ageing obsession is based on. On those guys.

⚠️ rgdal, rgeos, and maptools won’t be available on CRAN after October 2023. ⚠️
What are the consequences of this change? What do you need to do as a user and as a developer?

Scotland-loving #geologists, we need your help!
In less than a month, the @CyclingWorlds will be held in Scotland! The road race leads from Edinburgh to Glasgow, the time trials are between Stirling and the Lake of Menteith.
We'd like to tell commentators and viewers a wee bit on the cradle of geology! We're looking for about 5-6 spectacular features or interesting background facts of a few sentences each. Arthur's Sea, the Midland Valley are obvious ones, but we're sure you know more!
If you know something worth telling on geological features small and large that a viewer may see on their TV screen during the race, DM us and let us know!

🙌 Huge thanks to @emposkett, Head of #InternationalDevelopment at @ONS, for arranging an incredible full day of exchange at @ONS HQ. The program was enlightening and productive, starting with a conversation with Professor Sir Ian Diamond, UK's National Statistician, who shared his vast experience in statistics development, including Africa and academia. 📊🌍
The day continued with a presentation on @ONS governance by Chief of Staff Rob Bumpstead and Head of Policy, Will Laffan, on devolution. The @ONS, with its Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007, serves as a global model for reliable and independent statistics. The insights on devolution policy provided valuable lessons for Somalia's federal structure. 🏛️🤝
We also had the pleasure of engaging with the @ONS Geography team, but the final key highlight was the presentation and discussion with the ONS Data Science team. Together with @UNFPA_SOMALIA, they are working on developing machine-learning-based estimates for IDPs in Somalia, utilising digital satellite maps. This cutting-edge work is of immense interest to @NBS_Somalia, as we strive to produce accurate IDP estimates by the end of 2023. 🛰️🤖
The United Kingdom has been an important partner in Somalia's development journey, and we are grateful for their championing efforts, which led to Somalia reaching the debt relief Decision Point in 2020. They are also a core partner in Somalia's upcoming population and housing census. 🇬🇧🤝🇸🇴
We are excited to announce that @NBS_Somalia is soon to have a full partnership with @ONS, further strengthening our collaboration. Together, we will continue to drive accurate and reliable statistics, contributing to the growth and development of Somalia. 🌟📈
🙏 Thank you, @emposkett, and the entire @ONS team, for this valuable exchange and for being integral partners in our journey towards progress. 🌍🇸🇴🇬🇧

Hello hello 👋 #IWD2023 is nearly here, and so are companies' cut-and-paste platitudes. And once again we're bringing you the data to see whose support for #InternationalWomensDay is genuine, and who's still got work to do.
Here's a reminder of how it works ⬇️ (1/8)

Using data on the share of alcohol and tobacco duties paid by each UK nation, compared to the proportion the contributed to the population, we can get a sense of the relative purchases of each product.
Some interesting patterns here.

THERE IS NO £2,500 CAP ON ENERGY BILLS.
Instead the new 1 Oct guarantee, like the old caps, limits
- Daily charge (28p gas, 46p elec)
- & Unit rates (10p/kWh gas, 34p/kWh elec)
So use more, pay more. £2,500 is just what someone with avg use'd pay

I think this is a "gamble" in the same sense that quitting a job that hasn't given you a pay rise in 10 years is a "gamble".
The idea that something will come along eventually, without us doing anything different, seems at least as foolhardy as trying to change course like this.

Drug-related deaths knocked a full year off male life expectancy in 2020 in both the US and Scotland.
Much gets written about the uniqueness of the US drug death crisis, but the situation in Scotland is on a very similar scale, although the underlying causes are very different.

What’s driving the increase in the price cap? Let’s start with the profits made by the people who sell us our energy - the energy suppliers. 1/13
