Think social media is a bit out of control? It might be because there's no way to de-escalate conflict, which is an essential part of functional human societies. Here's my proposal for one way to do so, allowing people to admit their mistakes on @twitter. nickpunt.com/blog/deescalati…

Wasn't expecting to like this as much as I do. Apple really understands *less is more* for a lot of computing tasks. A product that nails a use case > grab bag of capabilities any day of the week.

A *lot* of ppl in their 30s+ with disposable income will be buying at least one of these for their parents for the holidays, and may pick up one themselves. I bet 249 was Apple's intended price point - that would have been ideal for this market - but ofc techflation hit.

I still think Apple should get into the indoor air quality monitoring space, and that devices peppered around the home like this are the perfect entry point. Perhaps future versions of HomeView will bring things like CO2, PM2.5, etc to the masses. nickpunt.com/blog/apples-nex…

Well this is interesting. I was doing @apple MacOS 27 voice dictation and got someone else's chat transcript in response. Or whatever this is.

I just asked Siri how to turn off these annoying watch charging notifications and instead of just doing that, it gave me wrong information 3 times πŸ™„ Earlier I asked it to turn off my lights and it loudly proclaimed something went wrong on my HomePod waking whoever was nearbyπŸ™„πŸ™„

So far I’ve had 0 useful interactions with the new Siri, and the dictation is no better. Is this thing still vaporware?

Because the smartphone emerged from a culture & incentive structure that could not restrain itself from building antisocial products & services, it feels increasingly likely this is how history will remember the smartphone.
"an infinite slop machine, a portable casino, and a 24/7 surveillance device." "an infinite slop machine, a portable casino, and a 24/7 surveillance device." "are you getting it?"

The common denominator I'm seeing in the discussion about AI in schools (pro & con) is the less experience with the education system someone has, the more reactive and absolutist their take.
There is literally zero reason for kids to use AI at any point of K-12 education. None.

Today's culture war thingΒ is something to performatively dunk on and a litmus test for tech v nontech tribe. However I haven't seen a single person I know w edtech experience say this is unequivocally bad. It's just the ones without any experience that are dunking.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other city officials announced a sweeping new policy Wednesday imposing a one-year ban on student use of generative artificial intelligence in New York City public schools from 2-K through 8th grade, while limiting screen time for younger students and launching AI literacy lessons for high schoolers. Back in 2010 I started @edsurge because I kept meeting fellow techies who wanted to work in edtech but hadn't a clue about how education actually works. 16 years later it's the same story. AI has tons of promise for edu (I'm psyched!) but edu is counterintuitive & complex.

By this definition of 'nearly run over' approximately ~250k people each day get nearly run over in SF.

I walk this street nearly every day and know the intersection well - almost bought a place half a block away! I get that a lot of people have good reason not to like the tech industry and all the jokers in it but self-driving tech is incredibly positive & literally life-saving.

We need mediums that challenge our beliefs rather than get us to dig into them. Un-nuanced views like 'Tech bad' or 'AI good' manifest in stupid blindspots like hating on self-driving or thinking AI is universally ok for schools (todays other stupid reactionary topic)

.@YouTube is overrun w slop. It's understandable given the times, but the one thing @nealmohan could do is let us block channels. But we can't. Unless this is fixed topic-based search is dead. Everyone will just retreat to 5 channels they like and then just slowly leave YT

We should have an exponential backoff rule for reintroducing similar/identical failed ballot measures. It's stupid they can keep going back on the ballot if they failed recently. If they fail, X years before they can propose again, if they fail again its 2X years, then 4X, etc
The Great Highway is coming to San Francisco ballots β€” again. For the 2nd time in two years, residents are set to vote on the road v. park fight, after organizers turned in 16K signatures today. missionlocal.org/2026/07/san…

Please @AnthropicAI @claudeai @ClaudeDevs stop making Claude speak with this inscrutable nonsense-specificity. None of these words (reveal, flip, board, round, off-screen, route, sweep, slot, pass, body, farm) are agreed upon vocabulary in my app. This is Fable 5 Max.

John Ternus has been set up to succeed as incoming CEO of @apple: New hardware = OLED touchscreen M6 Macs, foldable iPhone (2026) & 20th anniversary iPhone (2027) Quality software = snow leopard-like macOS27 AI, finally = Gemini-powered Siri Clean slate = post groveling 47 era

This was 100% intentional, as Apple famously plays the long game and really understands optics & message. It happened today bc Apple's AI answer is coming @ WWDC in June and he needs 2b associated w it, and 47s cooked (not by tim πŸ˜‚) so its now safe enough to make a clean break.

Its damn impressive that hardware, software, AND ecosys/AI have all been lined up so well for John; obviously some of it was his doing but still. Even in design, he avoids the blowback from the destined-to-be-controversial liquid glass change and arrives as the guy that fixes it
