The people who are claiming Brock Purdy is a “fraudulent MVP candidate” off of one loss are hopelessly lost in their own casual stupidity. Purdy had no luxury of a true X receiver today (or even a WR2, 3, or 4). The result of that is no viable downfield passing game. SF had to rely on a game plan heavy with run plays and short throws. The RB and TE were the leading receivers for SF today. They had to put that plan up against the NFL’s 6th best run defense. Compare that to what happened to Patrick Mahomes tonight. Similar offensive limitations: no legitimate downfield passing game, reliant upon the run and short throws, vs. the NFL’s 10th best run defense. Mahomes at least had a young, first round WR talent on the field, unlike Purdy. Purdy went 27/40 for 288, 1 TD and 2 interceptions. 3 TD drives, 20 points. 75.8 passer rating. Mahomes went 19/33 for 165, O TDs and 1 interception. No TD drives, 3 points. 58.3 passer rating. Neither the 49ers nor the Chiefs lost today because of anything other than the fact they faced a team that played much better within an unfavorable matchup. To conflate that to meaning neither Purdy (nor Mahomes by comparison) are of MVP caliber because they lost today is beyond moronic. It’s caveman-level lack of football understanding.
