ALT What do Legal Observers do? Legal Observers provide support by: Monitoring law enforcement at demonstrations Documenting arrests & police misconduct Communicating with off-scene legal support regarding arrests The information they collect may then be used in criminal defense of activists or in advocacy against police and government misconduct and repression. Legal Observers are one piece of a larger system of support working to provide activists with the tools they need to make their voices heard.

ALT Drivers' License Suspensions as Retaliation for Protest At a protest on 9/30/21, CHP suspended the drivers' licenses of five activists advocating for immigration reform. CHP relied on Vehicle Code 21061, a provision authorizing officers to alert the DMV when they believe someone is no longer physically or mentally capable of safely driving. Use of this statue with no legitimate basis serves only to retaliate against activists for their political conduct. If you or anyone you know is cited for VC 21061 at a protest please contact [email protected]. Helo us monitor further misuse of this law.
