With genetic Ca2+ clamping and chemogenetic activation of astrocytes, we show that astrocytes enhance neurovascular coupling when neuronal activation is sustained but not when activation is brief.

This is such a shocking graph. 🇨🇦 is falling behind in science, already existing investments lose their value due to diminishing support for science, our best trainees won’t return after their postdocs. Canada urgently needs long-term vision and plan for science

Do microglia generate oxidative stress in Alzheimer’s? Apparently not! Shown in this paper by Stefan Wendt and my lab microglia are protective and lysosome dysfunction seems to be key. doi.org/10.1016/j.redox.2022…

We encourage all MPs to support M-38 today, to create a dedicated @HoCCommittees on Science & Research - to embed science in our democratic institution + provide a way for scientists to engage with our gov. Thank you @KirstyDuncanMP for proposing this!

Depressing quote from the article below:
"...Canada’s current expenditures on science that are by far the lowest in the G7. Over the decades, the CIHR budget has dropped from approximately 10 percent to now barely two percent of the U.S. NIH budget."

Microglia are the immune cells of the brain, so it's important for them to function in any environment. New research from @brian_macvicar lab shows they can still do their job even when there's no glucose around! Check out their findings in @NatureComms go.nature.com/2xrVjcU
Congratulations to my colleagues @LPBernier and @elimyork on their latest publication! Happy to be a part of it 👍
Proud to share our work on the unique metabolic flexibility of microglia in the brain! These microglia won’t stop working, even without glucose! nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

Same Celebration with Nick and Ali just joining us after working hard in the lab.
Congratulations to my PhD supervisor and friend, @neurophy! Very exciting day!
Yesterday in the span of 10 minutes I received word that my @CIHR_IRSC project grants were funded and the work of @JennyBialecki and others made the cover of @SfNJournals. #surreal Congrats to @nlweilinger for amazing cover art!

At long last, the elegant work from @neurophy on how pannexin-1 channels regulate synaptic anandamide actions at TRPV1 receptors to gate glutamate release is out in @SfNJournals. Congrats to @JennyBialecki @nlweilinger @haleyv and everyone else involved! jneurosci.org/content/early/…

Optimists who reduce stress in their lives may enjoy “extraordinary longevity”, that is, live past 85. Dr. Jaideep Bains & colleagues in his @stressynomics lab study how neural circuits in our brains respond to & adapt for stress, & its contagious nature. bit.ly/2m2MaS5
This was a fun intra-lab collaboration with @elimyork and @JeffLeDue that should serve as a cautionary tale if you're considering imaging NADH-FLIM in GFP-expressing cells.
Excited to share a recent paper with @nlweilinger, @JeffLeDue, and @brian_macvicar showing how GFP affects metabolic lifetime imaging of NAD(P)H.
