This copy of Magna Carta in the Abbey's Library collection was made in 1300 and is one of just six known to have survived from this date. The charter was sealed by King John in 1215 and established the universal right to justice and a fair trial.

ALT A high-resolution, full shot of the original Magna Carta from 1215, written on aged parchment. The text is written in dense, dark brown medieval Latin script, spanning across dozens of tightly packed lines. The parchment shows signs of aging, with uneven, slightly frayed edges, horizontal creases, and light stains, particularly a notable tear on the lower-left side. At the very bottom center, a faint, circular reddish-brown wax seal is visible. The entire document is set against a plain, neutral background.

Scientists have traced Vincent van Gogh's “The Starry Night” to a celestial scene that suggests a new date for one of the world's most famous paintings.
Their findings indicate that rather than being a product of van Gogh’s imagination, “The Starry Night” may have been inspired by what he saw as he gazed heavenward from his French asylum 137 years ago.

Today is the 229th anniversary of the launch of USS Constitution, the ship America calls Old Ironsides.
On October 21, 1797, she slid into Boston Harbor as one of the first six ships of the United States Navy. In the War of 1812, British cannonballs bounced off her thick oak hull and sailors swore her sides were made of iron. The name stuck. She is still a commissioned U.S. Navy ship today, crewed by active-duty sailors, and the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world.
