I earn £100 grand a year. I have a detached house. 2 cars and my wife is a full time home maker. I can just about afford this. I probably couldn’t afford the house I own if I was buying for the first time today. My salary puts me in the top 5% of earners in the UK. Top 5% to have a similar standard of living to Homer Simpson. That is a disgrace. We have a flatter salary distribution than Soviet Russia and the highest taxes and borrowing costs we’ve seen in generations. Success is almost impossible because our tax system means hard work makes you a stressed out tax cow, not wealthy and certainly not free. We need something radical. Less state. More family. Less handouts. More reward for risk. Instead. Tomorrow, Labour will offer another batch of policies which will send one message to aspirational Brits: why bother.
I read a piece in the FT this week about the price of being middle class in Britain now and it said a couple earning £436,000 combined take home £216,000. That’s a crazy amount of tax, and it doesn't include VAT on purchases, council tax, stamp duty or other taxes (I think does include pension contributions). I can’t stop thinking about it.

Exactly this. People are always baffled when I say I stepped down from management last year at my place. But I got paid £2.5k more per year for all the stress and workload that comes with managing my store. Or I could go be the stock boy & not think about work after clocking out. Absolute no brainer for me, I stepped down.

What's the point in working harder if everyone earns the same anyway? Wage compression will ruin Britain.
🚨 NEW: John Healey will increase the minimum wage for over 21s from £12.71 to around £13.20

Liberal Tories never, ever learn about immigration. Never. The British government predicted about 10s of thousands of Poles would arrive after EU expansion in 2004. Close to a million did in a few years. Mass immigration between rich & poor countries is inherently dysfunctional.
Depressing stuff from the Telegraph arguing for the restoration of free movement because Poles and Romanians no longer want to come here, completely ignoring the vast new constituency which does: millions of regularised irregular migrants from Africa and the Middle East. Bonkers.

Both of "Westminster." Both live in Zone 1 London accommodation with easy access to the best facilities and largest jobs market in GB and yet likely living on benefits and arrested for plotting against us. Thanks for integrating, lads.

Despite the tragic outcome, this WAS a story and Jack was doing his job properly. There will be weeping and gnashing in certain quarters but it’s right that the journalism is recognised…

But this ideology breaks everything. Stonewall has become homophobic. The Civil Service has lost its impartiality. Universities set themselves against academic freedom. A breast-feeding charity enables men who want to abuse children by having them suck on their nipples.

Student loans were sold to students as "you'll earn more, so it's only fair you pay some of that back towards your education cost" Unless changed, of the five plans students are on - three of the repayment thresholds will now be *below* the minimum wage.
Britain’s new minimum wage: £27,456 a year. Higher-rate income tax kicks in at £50,270. Wage compression the Soviet Union could only have dreamed of.

Jack Grove spent months investigating Jason Arday's alleged plagiarism, fraud and serial fabulism. But Times Higher Education spiked his investigation in the face of an ominous overture from a fearsome defamation law firm. Now his work is being recognized nevertheless:

Susanne Yelin @JQInews: when optimizing a control protocol, expand your search space to unphysical solutions---as, in Portal, you jump between physical regions through an unphysical one. I was less startled by the strategy than by the juxtaposition of the speaker with Portal.

I'm still using Office 2007. Nothing has changed since then, other than renaming all the functions and moving them to different sections of the ribbon with each new release, so that no one could find them.

This is why people hate greedy, unethical @Microsoft. They’ve just installed an update on the computer of every user of Mac @Office 2021 that bricks Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc. We all have perpetual licences for Office 2021 but apparently Microsoft decided it was time to try to make everyone pay them money, even though the licence was supposed to be a one-off purchase. After some trial and error, this fix worked for me – posting here for anyone having the same problem: 1. Delete the Office apps (Word etc.) from the Applications folder 2. Download and run the Microsoft licence removal tool: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?lin… 3. Download and install the version of Office for Mac from 6th October 2026: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/of… 4. Enter your original licence code for Office to activate it 5. In the Finder, go to Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Microsoft and delete the MAU2.0 folder 6. Open Word, then go to the Word menu, then About Microsoft Word and check that it shows your licence 7. Still in Word, go to the Help menu, and make sure that the Check for updates option isn’t there 8. Don’t update Office for Mac and it should keep working – you need to keep updates off or Microsoft will install an update that bricks Office all over again What a waste of time.

A high school girl in Mexico just won a gold medal for putting out fires with a speaker. It plays one deep, low hum and the flames die in about 5 seconds. DARPA tried the same idea back in 2012 with a rig so big and clunky they never took it any further, and hers runs on a 12-volt battery and a speaker she can carry around. Sound is just air being pushed back and forth. A low note at 30 hertz means the air around the flame is flipping direction 30 times every second. Flames only exist in a thin layer where fuel vapor mixes with oxygen. Shake that layer hard enough and it keeps getting stretched thinner, the heat gets pulled away faster than the flame can make more, and eventually the flame rips right off the fuel. Whatever tears off is too cool to keep burning, so it just goes out. DARPA's report put a number on how little it takes. Once the air at the flame is moving about half a meter per second, which is barely a breeze, the flame goes out, and pretty much any pitch can get there if you crank the power high enough. Low notes just get you there way cheaper, because a speaker moves a lot more air on each push when the pitch is low. Two engineering students at George Mason figured this out by trial and error in 2015. They started with super high pitches, 20,000 to 30,000 hertz, and all the flames did was shiver. It only worked once they dropped down to 30 to 60 hertz, which is basically the bass on a hip-hop track. Ángela Karime's build is a 12-volt battery, a frequency generator, an amplifier and a speaker, tuned to 30 hertz. She named it Vortex Tech and talks about it shooting out little rings of air, and that's real physics. When loud, low sound gets pushed through a narrow opening, the air curls up into rings like a smoke ring, and those rings carry a puff of air way farther than the sound would get on its own. In her tests it put out small flames from about 2 meters away. She went through five prototypes and over 100 tests in about a year, and she says it's put out burning wood, flammable liquids, electronics and cooking oil. The cooking oil one is a big deal. Throw water on a grease fire and it flashes into steam and flings burning oil all over your kitchen, which is exactly the kind of fire where you'd want something that doesn't put anything into the pan. Now, sound can't cool anything down, so a big fire sitting on red-hot fuel can come right back the second the speaker shuts off. The George Mason guys worried about the same thing in 2015, and it's why this is still a prototype for small flames and the red extinguisher under your sink isn't going anywhere yet. Space might end up being where this matters first. Up there water floats off in blobs, while sound works the same with or without gravity, and acoustics researchers have already published experiments on fighting fires with sound on spacecraft. She's still in high school, and she's already working on a version that spots a fire and puts it out by itself. The gold in Indonesia also came with a special award that gets her into another international competition.

Oh, I don't know, maybe he did it because you're running on a platform of "let's take all of Elon Musk's stuff and throw him in the gulag"?
Elon Musk is dumping half a billion dollars into Republican races. Why? Because Democrats in Congress won’t be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump and will actually fight to lower costs.
