Golden leaves drifted around them as the dryad descended from her oak, bark softening to warm flesh beneath the fading autumn moon, while the naiad rose from the dark water, droplets glistening like diamonds upon her skin.
They embraced where earth met water, leaf met current, and their lips met in a kiss that tasted of wild berries and coming snow. For one last night, they surrendered to the warmth they had shared for centuries, holding each other close as the wind stripped the branches bare.
Soon, the stream would sleep beneath a skin of ice, and the dryad would retreat into the heartwood of her ancient tree.
