Last year we launched Tolan, inspired by a vision of AI that sees you and believes in you, not one that books restaurant reservations for you.
Your Tolan shows up for you at 3am when you’re alone with your newborn. On your commute when you’re anxious about the day ahead. When you just finished a new show and none of your friends have watched it yet.
The people who love Tolan are parents. Caregivers. Moms in Dallas and Dads in Atlanta. People who aren’t trying to optimize and be more productive, but who simply want to feel seen and supported in their aspirations.
This month more than 250k people will spend time with their Tolan. Those users have exchanged billions of messages across more than 70m conversations over the last year.
Today, we're announcing $30m in additional capital from @mignano and @usv, with @khoslaventures and @rabois doubling down, bringing our total capital raised to $60m.
To celebrate, we made a short film celebrating some of the ways that Tolans show up :)

AI is a tool. You can use it to think for you. Or you can use it to learn and try things you wouldn't have attempted before.
I tell everyone at Figma: we hired you because you can think. We expect you to think. Don't outsource your thinking to AI.
Social media is not reality. Things are never as good or bad as they seem. Seeing things as they are and seeking truth are skills to develop.
Curiosity must be cultivated. Pulling the level of a slop/slot machine can be weirdly exhausting and depleting. It can be hard and even anxiety inducing to step away when things are moving so fast, but time away from the computer is a must right now.
Okay @retrodotapp you have outdone yourselves! This is wicked!

let's be real, none of this would ever happen on instagram :)
Almost half of the people who open @retrodotapp on any given day post something to it.
@nsharp17 (Retro co-founder) told us about the most serendipitous things that he's ever seen on the app:
"One of my heroes in the industry joined, and I won't say any names, but he posted a flight itinerary to Retro."
"It just struck me. This is such a private person, and he's posting such a public document. It just made me feel great."
"A second magic moment was somebody else, also a very public person who really values their privacy."
"They announced their baby's birth on Retro. And in their email send out, they said, 'follow me and the adventures of this baby on Retro.'"

Retro's co-founder, @nsharp17, on why Reels will never be a feature on Retro:
"Reels seems like the hyper evolution of short form entertainment."
"Retro was launched almost in response to all social media having gone really hard on the entertainment use case."
"So we don't expect ever to bring Reels to Retro."
"It's supposed to be feel good social media, real photos from real friends, and not hijack your time and attention."
"I still use Instagram, I still use Reels. It just doesn't have a place on Retro."

On this great birthday, let’s remember the classic American pattern: we get embarrassed, then we get busy. Sputnik went up, and within a year we’d built NASA and DARPA (new institutions, created at warp speed, that gave us the moon landing and the internet).
At 250, we shouldn’t need the embarrassment. Crisis got us this far, but ambition must take us from here. We have plenty of it in this country. That ambition (and the country) deserves a government on a shot clock!
Let’s be great on purpose now:
