What. A. Day.
Still reeling from what happened yesterday. We did it!
To the supporters who have stood with us for 19 years: Thank you. This victory is yours.
To @SpeakerMenin , @nycdistrict1, @NYCMayor @Lynn4NYC Thank you. We could not have done this without your support.
Now we look forward to what is next. Getting all the horses safely to the next phase of their lives, finally running free!
And special thanks goes to @ShaunAbreu @CMShaunAbreu @OswaldFeliz @HarveyforNY @CMFrankMorano @CMMercedesCD46 @CnDelarosa @ShahanaFromBK @CarlMichaelW @voteshekar who had the moral courage to take a stand on something that wasn’t easy…but was the right thing to do. From the bottom of our hearts: thank you!

Yesterday, by a vote of 6-3 in the NYC Council Health Committee, which I chair, and a vote of 40-7 (w/2 abstentions) by the full body, @NYCCouncil banned horse carriages in NYC. The ban occurring now was driven by the increasing density of our streets and the tragic death of Romanch Mahajan.
Next comes the hard part, which is to ensure the well-being of the horses and protections for drivers and workers. As I stated publicly, as Health Chair, I am committed to playing a role in the process as the bill is enacted.
Thx to @ChrisMarteNYC for his leadership in taking on the bill and to @SpeakerMenin for her leadership and strategic navigation of this difficult journey that has taken years to accomplish.

I joined @SpeakerMenin today and voted to end horse-drawn carriages. Every single year, there’s a new incident. A new accident. If these issues were resolvable through training and education, they would’ve been resolved years ago. It’s time to end the rides.🐴🐴

To those who for years have been advocating for an end to New York City’s horse carriage industry: We did it!

Horse-drawn carriages have long been part of New York City’s history.
But with record heat and a busier-than-ever Central Park, it's no longer safe for the horses or the public.
Today’s legislation:
✅ Ends carriage operations by June 1, 2028
✅ Identifies training opportunities and tuition assistance for workers
✅ Creates a plan to help owners find humane placement for their horses
✅ Requires the City to develop a comprehensive workforce transition plan for the workers

Today, @NYCCouncil passed Romanch’s Law, ending horse carriages in NYC by June 2028.
When Central Park was created in 1858, NYC had roughly 800,000 residents, and carriages were part of daily life. Now, the Park sees 40M visits a year, and carriages pose a serious safety risk.

THIS IS FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS!
NYC just voted to END horse-drawn carriages! @NYCCouncil passed Romanch’s Law, and PETA is pledging $50,000 to help horses retire. This moment belongs to every PETA supporter who never gave up, and @SpeakerMenin and @NYCMayor for their leadership!
WE DID IT! We will have more to say, and many more to thank. But right now we will just say THANK YOU @speakermenin @nycmayor @chrismartenyc and all the many passionate advocates and supporters of the successful effort today to pass Romanch’s Law to BAN Deadly Horse Carriages in NYC!
History was made today! The next step is transitioning the horses to loving rescue farms. Stay tuned for more details to come.

Councilmember Gale Brewer casts her vote on the horse carriage ban with a little added color (as only she can).
Catches multiple Councilmembers by surprise, including Julie Menin and Shaun Abreu.

Cars are in fact banned from Central Park.
So sad to see the beloved Central Park Horse-drawn Carriage Industry ending after over a Century, based largely on one tragic accident. When there is a car accident in the area, of which there are many, they don’t stop cars from entering the Park. So why would they stop the Carriages? It was a Great Tradition. Another piece of History that’s gone. It will be missed! President DONALD J. TRUMP
