Virunga National Park is pleased to announce that the field team and community trackers have observed a new birth in the Bageni family. Uweko has given birth to a female infant.
This is Uweko’s first documented birth. At 11 years old, she joins the family’s adult females.
The Bageni family has recorded five births since January 2026. It now numbers 62 individuals and remains the largest mountain gorilla family monitored in the Park. This is the 18th birth recorded in the Mikeno sector this year.
We warmly thank the European Union, UNESCO, and our gorilla adopters for their continued support of mountain gorilla conservation in the Park.

The mother and other family members are usually killed to get the baby.

What’s happening near India right now is slipping under a lot of headlines.
Cyclone Arnab appears to have just explosively intensified into a violent, compact, Category 4 drillbit. He is moving straight towards the dense populations of Andhra Pradesh, and could be nearing CAT 5 (AKA Super Cyclonic Storm) intensity as we speak. He’s less than 18 hours away from making landfall.
Now, a combination of upwelling, shear, land interaction, and the onset of an EWRC should definitely weaken Arnab before he hits land. But this is still becoming a VERY dangerous situation, and that’s not even counting the inland flood threat from torrential rainfall.

Something else bothers me about this incident. I can guarantee that there are faithful Catholics in every one of their districts whose lives would have been changed by having their bishop visit and pray for them—probably a high point of their lives—but instead ALL SIX of them needed to spend the time and money to fly to DC (and stay over in hotel?) to stack up for a group prayer for this godless man who constantly spits on the things Christ stood for?
It's just another one of a thousand ways they show us that there will always be one Catholic church for the rich, important people and a much different one for the rest of us.
