Lhabab Duchen is an important Buddhist festival commemorating the Buddha’s descent from the Heaven of Thirty-Three to Earth, which takes place on the 22nd day of the ninth lunar month.
At the age of 41, the Buddha ascends to the heavenly realm to teach the gods and liberate his mother from samsara.
On this auspicious day, the karmic effects of both virtuous and non-virtuous actions are believed to be multiplied ten million times. Tibetan Buddhists observe the occasion by engaging in prayers, spiritual practices, acts of compassion and other virtuous activities to honour the Buddha and his teachings.
This year, Lhabab Duchen falls on Sunday, 1 November 2026.

Sikyong Penpa Tsering flagged off a peace march from Dharamshala to Kurukshetra, jointly organised by five Tibetan NGOs — U-Tsang Cholkha, Dhotoe Cholkha, Dhomay Cholkha, the Tibetan Women's Association, and GTPM for Middle Way Approach.
Sikyong also addressed Indian and Tibetan media representatives at the entrance gate of the Central Tibetan Administration.
The march aims to condemn and demand the repeal of the so-called “Ethnic Unity and Progress Law”, while bringing greater public and international attention to concerns surrounding the legislation and the Tibetan people's determination to protect their identity, language, culture, and fundamental rights.
Sikyong was accompanied by Kalon (Minister) Palden Dhondup of the Department of Home, Kalon (Minister) Urgen Tenzin of the Department of Education, Kalon (Minister) Kunga Tashi of the Department of Security, Kashag Secretary Dr. Arya Tsewang Gyalpo, and Dharamshala Settlement Officer Kunchok Migmar.

"The Central Tibetan Administration has a special burden. The democratic institutions built in exile have proven that the continuity of the Tibetan people does not require Beijing’s permission. At the recent Forum 2000 conference in Prague, Sikyong Penpa Tsering said that the mandate belongs solely to the Gaden Phodrang Trust. This needs to be communicated to parliaments across the world. When the time comes, the world should be prepared to reject a counterfeit head appointed by Beijing," writes Dr Siddhartha Ghosh, Director of the Red Lantern Analytica Foundation.
