🚨 Binance just suffered what could become the largest crypto hack in history.
And the numbers are insane.
On October 29, approximately $6.36 BILLION moved out of Binance wallets across 10 different blockchains, according to TRM Labs.
Here is what we know so far 🧵
1/ THE ATTACK
The attacker exploited Ethereum's EIP 7702 delegation feature, turning a Binance hot wallet into a wallet that could execute malicious transactions.
But this was not limited to Ethereum.
Funds moved across 10 chains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tron, XRP Ledger and others.
2/ WHO IS BEHIND IT?
TRM Labs attributes the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean state linked hacking group.
The group is believed to have prepared 50 pre signed authorizations before executing the Ethereum attack.
Binance has not independently confirmed the attribution.
3/ THE DAMAGE
• Estimated impact: $6.3B
• Approximately $3B frozen, according to Binance's initial update
• Multiple blockchain networks affected
• Deposits and withdrawals temporarily suspended
Tether, Circle and other ecosystem participants stepped in to freeze assets.
4/ BINANCE'S RESPONSE
Binance says its initial investigation points towards a potentially compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, which may have allowed access to a service container and enabled unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
The exchange says:
• No evidence of wallet private keys being leaked.
• Affected address authorizations revoked.
• Law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners engaged.
• All user losses will be covered through SAFU and company funds.
5/ THE BIGGER PICTURE
There is a lesson here that goes beyond Binance.
Crypto security is not just about protecting private keys.
It is also about securing the infrastructure surrounding them.
A compromised laptop, an exposed service container or a poorly secured signing workflow can put billions at risk.
Self custody, secure signing infrastructure and proper authorization controls are not optional anymore.
The most important question is no longer just how secure your wallet is.
It is how secure the entire system behind that wallet actually is.
What do you think?
Is this a failure of centralized exchange security, or a wake up call for the entire crypto ecosystem?
