She tore up her own blouse to help a wounded comrade during the Fort Hood shooting, using it to make a tourniquet. What she didn't realize was that she had also been shot in the back. She was only 19 years old.
Her name was Amber Pfund, a young soldier from the small town of Random Lake, Wisconsin, serving at Fort Hood, Texas.
It was Thursday, November 5, 2009, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Amber was inside a processing center where soldiers were preparing for deployment. It had been an ordinary day until a gunman suddenly opened fire. Screams filled the building. People fell to the ground. Soldiers on the post were unarmed, and chaos erupted.
But Amber did not freeze. She ran toward the wounded. She tore up her blouse, fashioned a tourniquet, and tied it around an injured comrade to help stop the bleeding. She continued moving from one wounded person to another, refusing to stop and think about her own safety. She was so focused on helping others that she never realized a bullet had struck her in the back.
She discovered she had been shot only later, while receiving treatment in an emergency room. That evening, she called her mother, Lisa Pfund, who was relieved to hear from her daughter. Amber explained what had happened and told her that she hadn't even known she had been hit.
The November 5 attack claimed 13 lives and wounded 31 others, making it the deadliest mass shooting ever to take place on a U.S. military installation.
Amber survived.
Five days later, President Barack Obama visited Fort Hood, where approximately 5,000 people gathered for a memorial service. He shared the stories of those who had been killed and also recognized the courage of those who survived. Among them was Amber. He described how determined she had been to help others, explaining that she did not realize for some time that she had been shot in the back.
The following day, First Lady Michelle Obama also shared Amber's story. She had met the young soldier at Fort Hood, where Amber explained what mattered most to her: the safety of her fellow soldiers was her number one priority.
In February 2010, Amber returned home to Random Lake, Wisconsin, where her community welcomed her as a hero. But Amber humbly rejected that description. She insisted she was not a hero; she was simply a soldier doing what she believed she had to do.
Although she survived, she continued living with the physical and emotional scars of that terrible day.
Years later, the Army announced that Purple Hearts would be awarded to victims of the Fort Hood attack. Amber was among those recognized for her wounds.
At just 19 years old, she ran toward danger to save others, never realizing that she herself had been wounded. She put her fellow soldiers' lives ahead of her own and kept helping even while bleeding.
Amber Pfund represents the courage, selflessness, and dedication of a soldier who never stopped caring for her comrades.
Some heroes don't realize they're heroes. They simply do what needs to be done.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The soldier in this story is Amber Bahr (later Gadlin; now Dimoff), daughter of Lisa Pfund—not Amber Pfund. She survived the 2009 Fort Hood shooting and is alive.

Another massacre of Christians in Ethiopia
50 Christians murdered yesterday
60 were murdered the other week
When will world leaders condemn the slaughter of Christians?
Or don’t our lives count?
🚨 Over 50 Orthodox Christians massacred in Endeto, Arsi, today, one week after 60 Christians were killed in the same area
Another deadly attack targeting Ethiopian Orthodox Christians took place on November 5th, 2026, in Endeto, Arsi, Oromia Region, just one week after a separate massacre claimed the lives of more than 60 Orthodox Christians in the area. According to local sources, more than 50 bodies had been recovered by Thursday evening following an assault involving armed militants equipped with mortars, sniper rifles and other weapons. The attackers also looted Christian-owned homes and businesses, seized livestock and destroyed property, while bodies remained scattered across nearby forests. Local sources identified the attackers as members of the Maddawalaabuu Brigade, an armed group backed by the government that was also involved in last week’s killings in Birbona and Chole Kebeles of Shirka Woreda.
Reports have emerged concerning the involvement of local government officials in facilitating the attack. Residents reportedly warned authorities days beforehand after observing armed gatherings and weapons being unloaded at a local mosque, but their warnings were dismissed. Woreda officials allegedly contacted zonal and regional authorities to reject additional security reinforcements, claiming sufficient forces were already available, while access roads were reportedly dug up to obstruct the arrival of ENDF troops. Sources further allege that local officials confiscated weapons from Christian residents while allowing other armed groups to retain weapons, leaving Orthodox Christian militia members severely outgunned. Several militia members were reportedly killed within minutes of confronting the attackers. ENDF reinforcements eventually reached the area after dark and began recovering bodies.

Just got home from searching all day. I was with one of the dogs.
We tracked his scent from the cell phone tower where the jacket was found all the way to a blue house off 1690 where everyone was focused earlier.
We are sure that the scent was tracked to around 150-200 yards behind the blue house where the last footprint was found (barefoot).
From there the dog tracked all the way to the road but can’t confirm if the boy walked that way, or if his scent was just lofting that way from further up the mountain.
There was a MASSIVE search in this area. Countless drones, at least two helicopters, three dogs, and probably close to 100 people.
There are some caves in the area and when I was getting ready to leave there were professional spelunkers on site. It was my understanding that they were planning to search some caves in the woods behind the blue house, but not sure if they have actually done that or not.
Please keep praying this little boy is found alive and safe. If you are able to help please consider going out to help tomorrow.
Here is a picture of Atticus. This dog is so dang impressive. There are no words to describe what this dog did today and how hard he worked.
This is in Lawrence County, Kentucky where a 6-year old autistic boy is missing.
He is believed to be wondering through the woods barefoot and little to possibly no clothing at all. We found his jacket, pants, and footprints showing he was barefoot.
This is rough terrain and last night was cold and raining. Luckily the rain stopped this morning.

Every day christians in Nigeria wake up to more massacres by the Islamic terrorist of the Muslim Fulani tribe. And every day the pope does nothing. Says nothing. And lets it continue unopposed. Disgraceful.

"Every day we wake up to killings. We hear 'you will run with your rice & meat in your pots.' It happened in Dec 2023. Same threat this year."

💔MISSING CHILD — LOUISA, KENTUCKY
Roman, just 6 years old, has been missing since approximately 4pm in the Tadpole Road area of Lawrence County.
Kentucky State Police have issued an IAN Alert for Roman, who may be particularly vulnerable due to his condition.
What’s especially concerning is that multiple people in the community are now claiming they previously reported seeing Roman wandering into the road and even chasing moving vehicles. Some say they contacted police and CPS about his safety.
Those claims have not been independently verified, but I certainly hope investigators are looking into them.
There are also concerns about nearby waterways.
Right now, the priority is finding this little boy. Please check your property, vehicles, sheds, and anywhere a small child might seek shelter.
Authorities say Roman responds to the song “If You’re Happy and You Know It.”
Please keep your eyes open. He needs to come home safe. 💔

FBI JOINS SEARCH FOR MISSING 16-YEAR-OLD GEORGIA GIRL
Amy Grace Robertson (16) has been missing from Alma, Georgia, since October 21.
Amy was reportedly last seen walking away from her home around 6:30pm. By 7pm, police were responding to a report of a runaway juvenile.
What caught my attention is that officers immediately brought in additional law enforcement to search a wooded area near her home. They didn’t find her.
Since then, investigators have followed multiple leads into surrounding counties, including Bulloch and Chatham, without locating Amy.
Now the FBI’s Atlanta office is assisting in the search.
I’m curious what prompted the initial search of the woods and whether investigators have reason to believe Amy may be with someone.
Nine days have passed, and this 16-year-old girl is still missing.
Amy is 5’3”, approximately 120 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue sweater and black sweatpants with multiple colors and patterns.

Imagine spending your whole career inside the CIA, the FBI, the State Department and DHS, and then deciding five days before a midterm that what the American people really need is a two minute video of you in your home office telling them to "stand firm, get organized" and "VOTE for democracy"… because nothing says nonpartisan like a club of 450 plus former spooks, agents and diplomats who somehow land on the same side of every single fight.
They call themselves The Steady State and their slogan is Hold Fast. And the same week they dropped this video, their own account was running a "Daily Swamp" episode accusing President Trump of trading on insider information, endorsing an Independent for Senate in South Dakota, pushing a piece calling the color revolution warnings a Kremlin talking point, and promising that once oversight committees "reclaim their authority" they can begin "pursuing justice for abuse of power." Their executive director's talk at George Washington University this week was titled "Accelerating Authoritarianism." So tell me again how this is a civics lesson?
Here is the reality. The last time former intelligence officials got this civic minded right before an election, 51 of them signed a letter saying Hunter Biden's laptop had "all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation," and it turned out to be garbage, and the country voted with that lie hanging over it. Nobody in this video signed that letter as far as anyone can tell, fine, but you don't get to borrow the credibility of the badge and then act shocked when people remember what the badge did with it last time.
Make no mistake, I have zero problem with anybody telling you to vote. Vote. Drag your neighbor with you. What I have a problem with is a bloc of people who held clearances and ran programs like DHS's Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships, it is right there on the screen under one of their names, organizing to tell you what "defending democracy" means while calling it nonpartisan… and I have watched for six years what happens to regular Americans who ask questions about elections when people with those resumes decide they are the threat.
We are a constitutional republic, not a democracy managed by retired spooks with ring lights. Your oath was to the Constitution, you keep telling us… so is ours, and ours says the people choose, not the people who used to watch them.
Hold fast, they say. We will. See you Tuesday.
We are former CIA officers, FBI agents, diplomats, and military leaders who spent our careers defending America from global threats. But protecting our constitutional democracy isn't something we can do alone, defending democracy requires all of us.
Stand firm, get organized, and make your voice heard on November 3rd. VOTE for democracy. VOTE for freedom. VOTE for our future. Tap the link in our bio to check your registration, access essential resources, and build your voting plan today! #HoldFast #Vote
