Retired Russian General Leonid Ivashov has delivered a devastating assessment of Vladimir Putin’s leadership, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and the deteriorating condition of the Russian state. Ivashov is no ordinary Kremlin critic. He is a retired general, professor, and geopolitical analyst with decades of experience in Russia’s military establishment. He publicly opposed the invasion of Ukraine before it began, warning that the consequences could be catastrophic for Russia itself. Now, nearly four years into the full-scale war, Ivashov argues that his worst predictions have come true. After watching Putin’s lengthy televised appearance, he described a president increasingly detached from the reality experienced by ordinary Russians. “I saw neither a leader, nor a commander, nor a defender of the people. I saw only a man living in a fairy tale, while the rest of the country is trying to survive on 16,000 rubles a month.” His assessment of the war was equally severe. According to Ivashov, Russia has failed to achieve meaningful military success while suffering strategic defeats that extend far beyond the battlefield. He described an economy under growing pressure, industries in decline, a collapsing education system, and scientific institutions struggling to survive. Healthcare, he warned, is deteriorating as regional governments reduce medical spending. Rising prices are steadily impoverishing ordinary Russians, while declining food quality adds another burden to households already struggling to make ends meet. But perhaps his darkest warning concerns Russia’s demographic future. Ivashov portrayed Russia as a country experiencing a profound population crisis, with the war accelerating the loss of working-age men and worsening an already dangerous demographic trajectory. He was equally dismissive of the Kremlin’s claims about Russia’s international partnerships. North Korea and Belarus, he argued, cannot provide the economic or strategic support Russia needs. And China, despite Moscow’s constant declarations of friendship, should not be mistaken for a genuine military or political ally. Having worked with Chinese officials for many years, Ivashov rejected the Kremlin’s portrayal of Beijing as a dependable strategic partner. His ultimate warning was stark: a strategic defeat in Ukraine could threaten not merely Putin’s political future but the territorial and institutional integrity of the Russian Federation itself. What makes these remarks particularly significant is their source. Ivashov is not a Western politician, a Ukrainian official, or an opposition activist speaking from exile. He comes from the Russian military establishment and opposed the invasion before the first Russian tanks crossed Ukraine’s borders. His conclusions are sweeping and controversial, and the specific quotations attributed to him require verification against the original interview. Nevertheless, his longstanding opposition to the invasion illustrates something the Kremlin has repeatedly tried to obscure: criticism of this war has also emerged from within Russia’s own military circles. The central question is no longer simply what Putin hopes to achieve in Ukraine. It is how much more Russia will sacrifice in pursuit of those ambitions.

Ten million people have watched a TED speaker accidentally destroy the entire brain training app industry. She filmed the talk once at TEDxVancouver and it has been on YouTube ever since. Lumosity charges $12 a month to simulate a diluted version of what she covered in 14 minutes for free. Her name is Dr. Lara Boyd. She is a neuroscientist at the University of British Columbia and the researcher who runs the Brain Behaviour Lab studying how practice physically rebuilds the brain after stroke. For over a decade she has repeated the same answer to the only question that matters: how do you actually change a brain? Her entire framework fits on a napkin. Every experience physically changes your brain. Chemical changes last hours, structural changes last years, functional changes rewire whole networks. The only driver that works is behavior. Nothing beats practice. The harder the struggle, the bigger the rewiring. No two brains need the same dose. That last rule alone has probably cost the brain training app industry a hundred million dollars in canceled subscriptions. "The brain you have at the end of this sentence is not the brain you had at the start." That is a paraphrase Boyd returns to across the talk. London taxi drivers have measurably larger spatial memory regions. Braille readers have larger sensory maps for the reading hand. Founders install a $15 meditation app and skip the one difficult conversation that would actually rewire their defaults. Parents hand their kid an educational tablet and never let the kid struggle with a problem long enough for the structure to lay down. The talk is free on YouTube. Boyd's lab publishes its research open-access. Boyd still teaches at UBC. Almost none of the ten million viewers have added one hour of struggle to their week since watching. The science is free. The willingness to actually practice the hard thing instead of the easy app is the entire edge.

Neil Young has filed a $10 million lawsuit against Donald Trump, alleging copyright infringement over the ongoing use of Young’s song “Rockin’ in the Free World” as the president’s walk-up music at midterm election rallies. The suit says the classic 1989 song is “a blistering anthem that contrasts the hollow promises of American political rhetoric with the harsh realities faced by the poor, homeless and forgotten. The lyrics pain vivid street-level portraits — a mother discarding her baby, addicts lost in despair, garbage piling in the shadows of prosperity — while the repeated chorus delivers a savage irony, celebrating freedom that clearly isn’t shared by all. In short, the song is the opposite of everything that Donald J. Trump stands for.” variety.com/2026/music/news/…

This is the biggest corruption scandal in American history. The Trump crime family is trying to sell the future natural gas rights of Alaska to the Russians in exchange for $25 billion in cash for themselves today.

🇷🇺 A UN investigation has concluded that Russia's systematic attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity, carried out as part of a state policy to deprive civilians of electricity, heating and other essential services. The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine found that Russian commanders knew the heating facilities they targeted were indispensable to civilian survival, particularly during winter. The report describes the consequences: millions left without essential services, hospitals treating patients suffering from hypothermia and frostbite after prolonged exposure to freezing homes, and deaths linked to the cold. Investigators also identified evidence implicating senior Russian officials, including Vladimir Putin, Sergei Shoigu, Andrey Belousov and Valery Gerasimov, in directing or overseeing the attacks. The findings come as Ukraine prepares for another winter under sustained Russian bombardment, with its air defenses facing critical shortages of interceptor missiles. The commission's conclusion is particularly significant: the destruction of Ukraine's energy infrastructure was not simply an incidental consequence of the war. Investigators found evidence of a deliberate state policy intended to inflict suffering on the civilian population.

🇪🇺 🇷🇺 There’s been a change in how European governments speak about the Russian threat. Within 48 hours, a wave of statements and mobilization across NATO’s eastern flank has coalesced into a clear and worrying pattern. 🇵🇱 Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says intelligence shared by Poland, Ukraine and NATO indicates Russia could eventually conduct drone or missile attacks against countries supporting Ukraine while attempting to portray them as accidents. 🇫🇷 In Paris, Emmanuel Macron emerged from a three-hour meeting with France's intelligence chiefs and political leaders warning that the Russian hybrid threat has intensified. France is reinforcing protection of critical infrastructure and defense-production sites. 🇩🇪 Those warnings are not emerging in a vacuum. Germany has formally attributed the attempted explosive-drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia, with subsequent investigations reportedly tracing the operation toward Russian military intelligence. German authorities are also investigating a professionally prepared weapons cache discovered in woodland near Berlin, two handguns and ammunition that officials say were intended for future attacks, including possible links to a foreign intelligence service. 🇪🇪 Further north, Estonia's security cabinet is preparing for another contingency: a possible Russian general mobilization. Prime Minister Kristen Michal says such a move could change Estonia's threat assessment sufficiently for Tallinn to close its border with Russia immediately. 🇱🇹 Lithuania, meanwhile, has detailed evacuation planning for a major military emergency. One of the evacuation routes from Vilnius leads toward Poland, where authorities in Podlaskie are preparing the region to serve as a transit corridor for evacuees from the Baltic states. That planning predates this week's warnings and should not be interpreted as evidence that an attack is believed to be imminent. But the regional context has deteriorated. 🇧🇾 Belarus is currently conducting military exercises near the Polish and Lithuanian borders, including areas around the strategically critical Suwałki Gap. And earlier this week, a NATO fighter shot down a suspected Russian attack drone after it entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus. None of this establishes that European governments expect a Russian attack in the immediate future. What it does show is something more concrete: governments from Warsaw to Paris to Tallinn are publicly preparing their populations and institutions for contingencies that until recently largely remained inside military planning documents.
