Niu Lai‘s success is the anti-AI-slop version of the “little guy who made it” overnight success story. It’s bad and juvenile but it is “manual crafted” (手搓). It’s a story of the little guy making it — a mother-and-son team driven by a deep conviction to bring a story they cared about to the big screen. Or at least that is the story we want to believe. Niu Lai’s film aesthetic is anachronistic, with a hint of nostalgia, and the nostalgia economy is having its moment.

It’s very rare you see this many things align around one meme the way they have with 牛来. The movie name could've been called anything, but it's called 'the bull is coming'. It could've launched months ago or weeks later than it did, but it launched 11 days before bitcoin put in a 25% candle. We’ve also never seen a viral meme character like this with such direct links to the market. It’s literally a bull. I’m completely fine being wrong here. You only get a few moments each cycle where the stars align this perfectly. The bull is here and it's $36m.
