A total of 1,391,830 families have failed to qualify for Aswesuma welfare benefits under the first updated beneficiary list published by the Welfare Benefits Board.
The Board said 2,383,630 families had completed the information update process by October 27, 2026, of which 991,800 families qualified for benefits under the poor and extremely poor categories.
Of the eligible families, 363,142 fall under the extremely poor category and will receive a monthly allowance of Rs. 17,500, while 628,658 families in the poor category will receive Rs. 10,000 per month.
The beneficiary list has been displayed at Divisional Secretariat and Grama Niladhari offices and published on the Board’s official website, wbb.gov.lk.
Appeals and public objections can be submitted from October 29 to November 11, 2026, through eservices.wbb.gov.lk or using application forms available on the Board’s website and at the relevant Divisional Secretariat offices. Public objections may be submitted anonymously.
The Board expects to publish a second updated beneficiary list in December, based on information relating to a further 740,127 families.
Payments to newly eligible beneficiaries on the first list are scheduled to be credited to their Aswesuma bank accounts on November 27, while letters to facilitate the opening of bank accounts will be issued from November 12. (Newswire)

Many models failed to predict this intensification. Official agencies badly underestimated the storm’s strength up until only a few hours ago. And the amount of weakening before landfall is far less than expected.
Now, Category 4 drillbit monster Cyclone Arnab is only a few hours away from striking land. This is going to be a long night ahead for Andhra Pradesh, India.

What’s happening near India right now is slipping under a lot of headlines.
Cyclone Arnab appears to have just explosively intensified into a violent, compact, Category 4 drillbit. He is moving straight towards the dense populations of Andhra Pradesh, and could be nearing CAT 5 (AKA Super Cyclonic Storm) intensity as we speak. He’s less than 18 hours away from making landfall.
Now, a combination of upwelling, shear, land interaction, and the onset of an EWRC should definitely weaken Arnab before he hits land. But this is still becoming a VERY dangerous situation, and that’s not even counting the inland flood threat from torrential rainfall.

Rain could be the most concerning potential impact from Cyclone Arnab in India.
As the storm approaches Andhra Pradesh, a dual interaction between a tropical disturbance to Arnab’s south and a trough to the west will slow his forward speed.
300+ mm (~1 foot) of tropical rain could fall as a result, with hours of downpours potentially inundating the coastal communities of AP the worst.
Arnab’s winds will trickle away if he takes this loopy approach to landfall, but the increased flooding risk and prolonged tidal surges would unfortunately outweigh the benefits of weakening. Water, not wind, will be the most dangerous hazard from this cyclonic storm.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North- western provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts and, fairly heavy falls above 75 mm are likely at some places in these areas.
Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the Central hills, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee and Hambantota Districts.
