Escaping from Jekyll...to Jekyll
An blog post about my difficulties I faced in choosing a website and a blogging platform: Simple requirements for a static website, that proved to be too elusive to fulfil.

I started replicating the agent-based modeling experiments in "Growing Artificial Societies" book, after a wonderful course on ABMs from @ComplexExplorer by @billrand
Here is the link for the first experiment

How open is āopenā AI, really?
If models are reusable, but⦠origin of data is opaque, work hidden & exploited, frameworks dominated by Big Tech, access to computational power restricted⦠āopenā is just an empty label.

Are there economic / social indicators that track people's welfare, better than the simple growth / GDP / inflation / Gini-coeff?
Also, for existing indicators, are there independent institutes verifying these numbers, methods of collecting them, and their adherence to their definitions?

I always thought it is the opposite. When you get electrocuted because of a mistake in the circuit board, or the whole thing will burst in flames, you become more thoughtful and calculating.
Compiler bugs, while a huge testimony the genius of mankind, are lame :D
I just tried @cohere chat model. This thing is blazingly fast! How is that possible, engineering wise?
Another long night with @htmx_org and @Alpine_JS. The philosophy and execution behind them is amazing. But I feel there are rough edges in the documentation and examples. A problem rose when I wanted to connect a HTMX event to AlpineJS directive.
Another issue is the default value of radio inputs (still unresolved): I want to show the user their selected settings from the DB. Several hours in this, no success. It could be nothing related to @Alpine_JS specifically, and has something to do with how the DOM works. Will see
After some search, it turned out that AlpineJS does not interpret correctly (no idea why) with with camelCase notation, and for that reason, HTMX provide the same events, with kebab-case instead.
As a ML person, I always dreamt to use ML and optimization to build useful artificats, for me and for people around me. However, as I discovered over the last 5 years, ML is just a small cog in a the bigger software machine
And with @Cloudflare , it became super easy to expose my work. The tunneling technology, in comparison with less-friendly ssh-proxy, is a god send!
A huge contributor to this is the phenomenal advances in the tooling. @streamlit and @htmx_org made is super easy to build complex interfaces, to serve the value of the model to users. Internally, such tools improved the communication with the stakeholders dramatically.
It proved critical to acquire a system-wide view on the problem (from the interface with the user, all the way to the deployment), while expanding my engineering toolbox, in order to deliver almost any value.

A QA engineer walks into a bar. Orders a beer. Orders 0 beers. Orders 99999999999 beers. Orders a lizard. Orders -1 beers. Orders a ueicbksjdhd.
First real customer walks in and asks where the bathroom is. The bar bursts into flames, killing everyone.

We lost a titan of programming languages, programming methodology, software engineering and hardware design. Niklaus Wirth passed away on the first of January. We mourn a pioneer, colleague, mentor and friend.
