Blown away by the interest and rage 😡 on the work on visa inequality.
With LAGO I have a clear aim: to tell a truthful, beautiful and inspiring story about the movement of people around the 🌍
To do so I collaborate with @fedfragapane ✨
First we looked at visa inequality 👇

Delighted with media interest and reactions.
Some headlines suggest that Europe is making a profit from the fees, which is not the point : fees cover the processing of applications, not the outcome.
But the unequal rejection rates in some countries is a very high price to pay!
It’s been great to team up with Verdiana Pasqualini and to work with @NathanShammah and Ben Castanon for the 2023 Quantum OS Survey by @unitaryfund , a noprofit fostering open source quantum tech. Looking forward for the impact that this survey can have on the community!

While deciding which technology to use for this web report, we evaluated power BI, Svelte, and eventually selected #quarto. So happy with this choice, quarto is such a well crafted tool to weave together R and JS, getting the best of both.

🧵1/ Today at @unitaryfund we released the results of the 2023 Quantum Open Source Survey. Lots of interesting data on the current status of software for quantum computing and we start to see some trends as this is the second year in a row. Short thread with my top picks.
📊 The 2nd annual Quantum Open Source Survey results are here!
A huge thank you to all the outstanding community members who provided feedback, guidance, and thoughtful responses to the survey.

For folk interested in the issues that the current Eritrean cycling visa situation is raising, there is a very insightful recent blog written by @martaforesti and @othomn for @AfricaAtLSE which describes the situation very well and is well worth a read…

Yes they are!
Europe and the UK don’t do much better: rejection rates for leisure and business visas are way higher for Africans than most other nationalities.

On visas, still 🚨🚨
How easy is it to visit the UK 🇬🇧 for business or leisure?
Well, it depends. China, Turkey and Nigeria lodge similar numbers of applications. Yet Nigerians are twice as likely to have a visa rejected than Turks and four times the Chinese.
Why? 🤔 #visa
Europe is losing out from its own discriminatory visa regimes.
And as @martaforesti & @othomn write, this also needs to change to build better and more equal relations with Africa.
New @AfricaAtLSE blog now out ⤵️
The tragedy of visas🚨
In a desperate attempt to keep people away, Europe is making it so much harder for people to visit for work or leisure, at the cost of collective opportunities. Shooting itself in the foot. Literally.

Somebody simply has to write the ultimate catch-all essay on disruptive, libertarian, private-sector-touting entrepreneurs simply begging and demanding for state intervention at the end of their journeys. (This is the Titan sub company's adviser.)

Visa systems are broken. And we all miss out. Me and @othomn have some thoughts 👇
Even featuring at the Venice Biennale is not enough to get a visa. Europe's visa policies look increasingly outdated. blogs.lse.ac.uk/africaatlse/…

Why do people get on the boats and die at sea?
Because if you are from a poor country, there is no other way. Explore the data 👇

You cannot visit, you cannot be trusted, you cannot do business, you cannot move.

In the 1920s, cars slaughtered so many pedestrians that the public was furious.
Car owners were regarded as sociopaths.
Car sales dipped in 1924.
So the auto industry fought back with a clever ploy:
