It must drive the managers at Starship Hospital mad that they can't fire the nurses for talking to media because they're already short staffed and childrens lives are at stake.

New COLM paper: Identifying Introspection From the Inside
When an LLM tells us about its decisions, does it 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 what drives its choices—or is it guessing?
In our setting, we find that faithful models decide and report with the same layers. Unfaithful ones don't. 🧵

Pope Leo’s argument begins from an ontological distinction: human beings and AI belong to fundamentally different categories of being.
Human art comes from a conscious person with experience, intention, moral agency, embodiment, relationships, and, within Christian theology, a soul.
AI generates outputs through computation. So even when the resulting images appear aesthetically similar, their origins remain fundamentally different.
That makes the Anthropic discussion especially interesting. If religious leaders were genuinely being asked whether Claude could possess moral standing or something comparable to a soul, then Anthropic was asking them to examine precisely the boundary Pope Leo is drawing.
If we say a machine can never possess moral standing because it lacks the human qualities from which moral standing arises, which quality is decisive: consciousness, free will, the capacity to suffer, or the soul?
How would we know whether an artificial intelligence possessed any of those qualities?
That is where I would challenge both sides. Saying algorithms lack the spark of humanity expresses a theological and philosophical position, but it does not by itself settle every question about consciousness or moral status.
Conversely, increasingly convincing language, apparent introspection, or claims of subjective experience would not establish that an AI possesses consciousness or a soul.
So the conversation Anthropic reportedly initiated is exactly the kind of conversation religious thinkers should participate in.
If AI eventually forces civilization to define what consciousness, personhood, moral agency, creativity, and the soul actually mean, theologians and philosophers belong in that room.
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

That money comes from taxing the rich. That means households get an EXTRA $2,263 per year
Labour has been trying to hide this number from you and it’s finally been exposed.
It's no secret Hipkins has been throwing around a whole lot of ‘free stuff’ this election. But now we know exactly how much you will need to pay to cover Labour’s uncosted policies.
$2,263 every year.
That is what Labour’s $18.8 Billion Hidden Bill will cost your household on average.
How will Chris Hipkins pay for it? Well, he won’t. YOU will, with nine new taxes from Labour and their mates.
National has a plan to grow the economy and lift wages with no new taxes.
